batman is literally the most effective vigilante in either dc or marvel when it comes to actually stopping crime AND helping people. as bruce he provides thousands of jobs even to ex-criminals and felons, low income housing, programs that gives compensatory money to orphans, widows and victims of villains, and obviously all the good he does as batman as well

Also, sometimes there's a giant clay monster on a rampage or half the city has been flooded with fear gas and uh, I don't think holding a charity ball will do much in those situations.

the penguin is a mobster, the league of shadows is a mob, riddler is a mobster in the memorable stories. i’m pretty sure, excluding Catwomen and Freeze, you could get the whole gallery on RECO

right, because Batman is making a living fighting organized crime.....oh. he doesn't. his money comes from somewhere else. can't imagine where though. and charities definitely aren't just PR for rich people who want to be public-facing without experiencing social backlash the same way out of touch celebrities do. billions are always made ethically and with morals in tact

id like to note that “the batman 2022” does it well making bruce an institutionalist who wants to work w the cops and do justice “the right way” meanwhile catwoman and the movie broadly screams at him “they are just as corrupt as the villains u face”, its abt narratives counter balances

Batman also was created in 1939 when organized crime was, like, at its peak in America - the police were famously corrupt back then. it's really been a task of modernizing the character to avoid the "beating up poor people" which, imo, is just bad writing for Bruce.

Batman is doing his best. There’s so many Wayne Foundations. It’s just that Gotham is cursed in multiple ways both metaphorically and literally

This is the perfect argument for why Batman is a good vigilante. He sees street crime as a symptom and organized crime as the real problem worth fighting. Of course he’ll stop a mugging if it’s happening in front of him but he puts more of his effort into using his detective skills to find the real culprits pulling the strings. The police can’t be trusted (except Gordon) so he sidesteps them to do what they won’t.

If Bruce Wayne used his money to fight crime he would be accused of using his wealth to side step bureaucracy for his own agenda similar to Musk and Gates

Also, Batman is the one funding a huge chunk of the cities infrastructure to fight things like poverty. But when the rest of the city is SO corrupt that he’s basically fighting it alone, there’s only so much he can do. Bruce Wayne is wealthy, but he’s still just one guy. And has very, VERY few people he can reliably trust to handle things for him.

I assumed that Batman was already giving the money to charity to fight crime and that he got involved in the super villains. He goes bankrupt in multiple story lines.

Is organized crime still a heavy enough influence on present society to write a story around? Or would you say that Batman comics, to be what they were at their best, need to be reframed? I've seen people argue that Batman should be rewritten to fight cops.

I love kind and caring batman, batman the animated series will always be my batman. it is a problem to write a story about compassion winning when the baddies just keep criming and killing over and over cause you need more content

Batman should adjust to the modern age, where fighting organized crime means fighting people who are the wealthiest of us, who have hoarded their wealth instead of distributing it

also all of the most interesting aspects of Batman as a superhero come out with the organized criminals - the detective stuff, complex plans, etc. isn't super useful or interesting when applied to street crime

imagine how many kids getting help from those charity programs hate batman because their dad hates him because batman kicked his ass once on a job (working for a crime boss)
