Pre Heat that cast iron pumpkin housing up to 400 degrees before welding and it will weld like butter, I do that on my 8.8 fords for drag racing No issues

Don't drain the fluid before. clean the area and stick weld it using several passes with low heat input 3/32 7018 rod at 75 amps first pass and 65 amps for additional passes. 3 passes total running stringer passes.

You should weld both sides. The other side will have all the stress on it after you weld it.
