The month of Kislev marks the beginning of the cold winter season. The days grow shorter, and at times, it seems as though they are darker. However, the month of Kislev also offers us a new perspective on reality. Throughout the days of the Second Temple, from its very inception, Kislev emerges as a time that inspires the people to act for Jerusalem. In this month, the prophet Haggai urged the people to resume building the Temple after a long hiatus, despite the challenges. In this month, Nehemiah, the royal cupbearer in the Persian courts, learns of Jerusalem's dire state and decides to ascend to rebuild it. And, of course, in this month, the Maccabees fought to purify the Temple and rekindled the light of the menorah.
