@thewritelady: On Valentine's Day 1920, jazz singer Mamie Smith, went into the Okeh Record Studio in New York and recorded a phonograph record, "Crazy Blues." "They" said there wasn't a market for race records. Colored people didn't own victrolas & wouldn't buy records "they" said. Well, "Crazy Blues" proved them wrong. It sold a million copies in 1920. That led other record labels to snap up "colored female blues & jazz singers." Rumor has it that Mamie Smith was the first African American to make a vocal blues recording which may not be true, but her success definitely started a trend.#mamiesmith #Lemon8
