To be fair, he actually attacked the Roman establishment. There were lots of cults at that time, which were like gangs or the Mafia. They had begun threatening the Roman power structure. One of these Cults was a Jewish cult lead by the Rabbi called Jesus. It’s likely that Rome saw an opportunity to send a message to other cults by offing the leader of a smaller, yet threatening one.
