my Grandpa saved himself from serving on a sub because he knew German. he was at a base down south waiting for orders and on KP. there were German POWs running their mouth in the kitchen. Grandpa only spoke German at home until he started school so he responded back to the Germans in German. He spent the rest of WWII on that base interpreting.

I dont know if you know this about marines, but we are very particular about the difference between basic and bootcamp. we dont call it basic. recruit training maybe but that's a stretch
