In SE Asia it has nothing to do with white people. It had to do with wealthy people being inside while poor people had to work out in the sun. Wealthy people set the beauty standards.

I have a woman that is close to me, I care about her but it hurts to see she has a inferiority complex, she added a pull-down tint cover to her tinted window. She wants to be white so bad she will bow in their presence. When I visited the family they inspected her skin and asked why wasn't she paler than she was 😒

in asia, trying to be white doesn't mean their trying to get closer to white people. it's a class thing and its been that way before they even knew of white people

So what if someone doesn’t want to get dark from the sunlight? Its just preference, im brown and doesn’t really use umbrella and i was just at the beach no lotion lotion but its me, im not hating on those that doesnt want to be tanned. Your pinoy pride is too much leave them be.

“Don’t stay in the sun, you’ll get dark”— it’s more than a beauty myth. It’s a lingering effect of colonial programming that taught Filipinos to equate light skin with privilege and dark skin with shame.
Spanish and American colonizers pushed Eurocentric standards through religion, education, and media. Over time, this led to colorism: skin-whitening products, fair-skinned idols, and everyday comments discouraging sun exposure.
But Filipino skin — rich, brown, and rooted in our Austronesian heritage— tells a story of homeland, resilience, and beauty.
Decolonizing means reclaiming what colonizers tried to erase — starting with how we see ourselves.

When I go to Vietnam every one is covered up, and the whitening creams are everywhere. Makes me so sad, all the advertising everywhere has white skin and Caucasian features

Every time I compliment my nieces on their tan skin my mom does not understand why I’m complimenting them on being tan. It’s so backwards

I don’t hate my tan, I just hate the sun. Staying out of it kept my skin young. I’m glad I don’t need long sun exposure to tan because I’m scared of leathery skin when I grow old, early wrinkles and skin cancer. 🤣

I hated the "who's darker game" when a friend or relative would hold up their forearm with yours and compare skin tone. I'd lose every time. Hell, we need our Vitamin D.

I was told the dark vs white skin came from the idea that lighter skin ment you didn't have to work outside, which some equate that to a higher social status. Kind of like white people started this tanning thing bc it was an indication that they went on/had the money to go on vacation. Now both of them just got out of hand

Natural tan doesn’t mean intentionally sunning. I personally don’t enjoy sitting in the sun for a tan. However, if I’m working on my yard and the sun is out, that’s a natural tan.

I used to get made fun of as a kid but now that I am older, I’m unbothered by any rude comments. First I have lots of self love and self awareness so say what they want it only tells me more about that type of people they are ☺️stay positive and stay loving yourself
