A Silent Voice is about a boy named Shoya Ishida and a girl named Shoko Nishimiya. When they’re in elementary school, Shoko transfers into Shoya’s class. She’s deaf, and she tries hard to fit in, using a notebook so her classmates can communicate with her. But instead of being welcomed, she becomes the target of cruel bullying—especially by Shoya. He mocks her voice, pulls her hearing aids out, and even causes her physical harm.
At first, the class laughs along, but eventually, the teachers and students turn against Shoya when Shoko leaves the school. He becomes the scapegoat for everything that happened and starts getting bullied himself. Over time, he becomes isolated, and the friends who once followed him abandon him. That marks the start of his downward spiral.
Years later, in high school, Shoya is a very different person. The bullying he endured changed him. He feels intense guilt for how he treated Shoko and believes he doesn’t deserve to be happy. He avoids eye contact, imagines giant Xs covering people’s faces, and has no real friends. He even considers ending his life but changes his mind and instead decides to make things right with Shoko.
He learns sign language and finds her again. When they meet, he apologizes, and to his surprise, Shoko forgives him. Slowly, they start spending time together. Shoya starts to reconnect with people—he makes a new best friend named Nagatsuka and even faces old classmates like Naoka and Miki, who were also involved in the bullying or ignored it. There’s tension as they all confront their past and realize how much they hurt each other and Shoko.
Despite rebuilding their friendship, both Shoya and Shoko still carry deep emotional scars. Shoko believes she was a burden to everyone. She smiles often, but inside she’s hurting. Shoya, meanwhile, is still learning how to forgive himself. Their bond grows, but so does the weight of everything unsaid.
Then comes the darkest moment in the film: Shoko tries to take her own life. She thinks the world would be better without her. But Shoya realizes what’s happening just in time and saves her—although he falls and ends up in a coma.
When he wakes up, everything shifts. Shoya
