As a millennial, I see it from black gen z and other gen zers of color too. It could be argued that the demographic matters in terms of older gen z but it’s more generally seen in younger gen z. Like 25 and younger.

To be honest I did get a gen Z stare at a fast food places from a young blk girl. I don't disagree with you thesis though. I also agree that they are only brave & speak online & in person the are too scared to match that energy in person.

I would say this EXCEPT my daughter attends a Black owned and operated summer camp. Last week, the receptionist gave me the Gen Z stare when I asked about the lunch time so that I could bring my daughter lunch. I was taken aback by the stare. I then asked her when her boss would be there. Suddenly her personality changed. It’s disrespect and the belief that there will be no consequences for the disrespect.

I’m glad someone said it! The criticisms/characterizations of Gen z & Millenials are usually about white people. As if we don’t exist 🤷🏽♀️but sometimes, erasure isn’t so bad after all 😌✨

Hey, American living outside the US here. This is also a thing people do more often outside the US. It's just a lack of concern related to hospitality. they don't care if you feel welcome. I don't like it but it never feels malicious like some people report. 🤷♂️

I work at a coaster and a majority of my customer base is 15-20 years old, so I experience the stare a little more often than others. in my experience, its almost exclusively white kids, and it tends to be the sport/popular kids. I haven't gotten it once from someone black or brown, but SO many times from a white girl who looked stunned and confused I dared to ask her how many tickets she walked up to my counter to buy 😭

I don’t think it’s a white youth thing. In my experience I’ve noticed it’s a wealth thing. Plenty of poorer white kids I’ve come across are overly social but the rich kids, especially Asian and white children look at me like I’m beneath them.

At its kindest, I'll attribute it to social awkwardness, dissociation or delayed response. When it is intentional, yeah, it reminds me of Boomer entitlement, witholding interaction to see if the other person would backpedal or perform extra labour to appease.
