Thinking 17 is late to come out just gave me an existential crisis 😅

My friend is a parent to three kids and came out as trans in their 40s. She’s thriving. There is no too late. Also it’s always fun to be reminded how confident we were as teens, saying shit like this with our whole chests 😂

I think representation has made being out more culturally appropriate but there are people who come from families and environments where it's still not safe to be out. I came out in 2003 when I was 19, which was not easy at all, but I felt more comfortable with myself and safer expressing myself as a legal adult.
There is no age limit for people to discover their true self or being comfortable presenting that to the world around them

I think things are sooo different for this gen socially that they can’t imagine the barriers people had to face in the past. They may know intellectually, but they’ll never really (thank god) understand the shame and rejection older people faced.

Interesting! I’m 41, always knew I wasn’t straight, but didn’t have the language or confidence to identify as queer until my 30s. Meanwhile, I hear from my kid that 10 and 11 yr olds are just like “btw, I have crushes on boys and girls” and everyone is cool with it. Definitely depends on the community you’re in, if the support is there 🧡

I think the age you come out depends on the family you come out too. If you know your parents love you unconditionally coming out is safe. Even then it’s your choice to come out in every space at your own pace

Matthew Shepard was m*rdered when I was in middle school, just starting to try to understand myself. Even tho young people still have an uphill battle today, things were VERY different back then.

I came out as Ace at 39/40… because I didn’t have the terminology. It’s different for everyone.

its not a gen z thing! i think that’s just them thing, probably based on them not knowing much about queer history!

The idea of too late (for anything) comes from a youthful mentality for sure! As a gen xer, I will say there is … chagrin at not understanding yourself sooner, however!

20 is when I came out. And in 2003 that wasn't great.

Elder millennial here. I came out to myself (not to others, just admit it myself) when I was 34! Every person has their journey.

I came out in the late 90s, the first person at my school came out after we had left and it was still massive gossip. My best friend who is 9 years younger than me came out before me 😂 she was 12, I was 22, she has no concept of being in the closet and doesn't get it!

I came out between the ages 17 and 19 I’m 26 now. I kept going back in because, people who weren’t apart of the community would shame me. Maybe I shouldn’t say back in because, it was more they just made question when I didn’t need to. Some of my family doesn’t know but I’m so open about it that if they have tiktok they can find out easily enough. I’m bisexual if you wanted to know. Anyway, all this to say this why’ late in life ‘or people who took longer to figure it out hate people who figured it out at 11 or 12 years old. I’m sorry you had better understanding well I thought my attraction had to be 50/50 to be bi.

That’s a reaaaallly ignorant view on their part. 17 isn’t “late” nor embarrassing. That’s the kind of perspective you have when you don’t interact with enough people unlike yourself.

I feel like thinking there's such a thing as "too late to come out" is like thinking there's a length of time of having a headache that's pointless to take a painkiller
