Many who criticize the Catholic Church fail to recognize a fundamental truth: it was the Catholic Church that gave the world the Bible. The New Testament did not fall from the sky fully formed. It was through the careful discernment, councils, and guidance of the Holy Spirit within the early Catholic Church that the canon of Scripture was determined.

No, it’s because of 1 word: Transubstantiation. Not here to cause problems but just clear up any confusion. Catholics believe Jesus’s words in the Bible were literal when Christ referred to His body & blood. So, Catholic theology believes the bread & wine are truly transformed into Jesus’s body & blood, while still maintaining the physical integrity of which it remains. This is a core doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church, so the Catholic religion requires courses for people interested in participating in Communion - so they can learn & understand the sacrament, which again, derived from their perception of the Bible. Many other religions or Christians read that reference in the Bible & take whatever they choose as a symbol for their communion. My question is why would Christians want to partake in Catholic Communion if they don’t believe in what the Catholic religion teaches about the Eucharist?

I think you are miss-understanding what nazza was saying. I don’t think the Catholic Church is gate keeping like saying no one can or they only Catholics can partake in. From my experience they prefer if you are not a member of the church to not participate, if you do wish to participate at a min you go to confession before. Thats my experience growing up with a step mom who is Roman Catholic.

It’s actually a sin to take communion outside of the Catholic Church and you’d understand this if you do more research on it. It’s not gate keeping it’s sacred there’s a reason why to this and it’s a slap in the face to even say this

I know many have said but Catholics don’t gatekeep communion. We acknowledge that other Christian faiths have communion but our belief of communion, the Eucharist, is different. We believe in the body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus Christ when taking communion. It is not just a symbol or remembrance. This is from John 6:53-56, as well as the last supper. So as Catholics when we prepare our hearts and minds for communion through “Sunday school” preparation, it is to learn, recognize and accept that truth. If you’re not Catholic, then most likely you’re not prepared to receive Jesus as true body and blood. Not to just be denied to receive Him but on the contrary, welcomed to learn, understand and accept that it’s not just a symbol, a spiritual connection but that you are ready and willing to receive the fullness of Jesus (body, blood, soul and divinity). When said that we shouldn’t take communion outside of the Catholic Church, it is because communion is not consecrated and believed to be the true body and blood of Jesus Christ.

You can't take communion at a Catholic mass unless you're a Catholic in a state of grace. Beyond that, you can do what you'd like.

You can receive communion at a Protestant church if you want to. But at a Catholic Church, transubstantiation occurs during the Mass. In the Eucharist, we are receiving the body and blood of Jesus, not a symbol of it like Protestants believe. It would be odd for non-Catholics to even want to receive communion at our Mass bc they don’t believe it is the true body and blood of Christ. Any non-Catholic is always welcome to come up for a blessing during Communion, but no, you cannot receive it unless you have received the sacraments and are in good standing with the Catholic Church. Sadly, satan worshippers often come to Mass and steal the consecrated host to desecrate it in their rituals. Even they know it is Jesus, not a symbol as Protestants believe. This is why our Priests, Deacons, and Eucharistic Ministers have to make sure the host is consumed before leaving the altar.

@Tracy Lynn Renwick:Show the words in scripture where Christ instructed the disciples being the only ones to offer communion after becoming apostles. There is NO scripture describing any person who is to give communion to others. We don't make it up as we go along. It appears Catholics have a other bible somewhere to say specific people were given this privilege. Jesus himself was immersed in water when he was baptized in the river Jordan. Catholics sprinkle water on a baby's head. Ok, fine. This interpretation works for you, and how you do it doesn't affect me. I'm not going to debate the difference. You cherish this moment. I prefer to know the person being baptized is fully aware of the decision they are making. I don't believe it affects your salvation. You seem to take how I serve my lord personally. why?

Growing up a “Sunday Catholic”, as I call it, I received communion at my family’s church every Sunday until I moved out on my own at 20. I later went to a friend’s wedding at an Episcopal church and received communion (not realizing what denomination) and my mom found out and was like it was the worst thing ever!

Take communion at a Christian church where you can receive communion at any time. Not at a Catholic church. Each faith has its own beliefs and rules. Respect that!

Communion is for all who believe in Jesus Christ. It doesn’t belong to one denomination. It’s for all to partake. Everyone who believes. Communion is a very sacred time, to talk to God, confess and become holy before Him…It’s for everyone

Genuine question, have you read the Catechism? Every section is linked back to scripture. As a cradle Catholic, most of us aren’t properly Catechised. I’m finally taking the time to read my Bible and the Catechism (thanks to Fr. Mike Schmitz!) and finally starting to understand it all.

I actually learned from a Catholic priest in March that you can take communion in the Catholic Church as long as you are baptized by the trinity. Your baptism is also valid in a Catholic Church as long as it’s under the father, the son, and the Holy Spirit. Love your facts

It isn’t gate keeping. It does not require confirmation. Unless you have been both comparing the two is unfair comparison

I grew up in the Southern Baptist Church and have my own issues & trauma but one sweet memory I have is the way our Pastor held communion. His loving eye contact with each Deacon as he gave them their trays and then served them communion was not just routine. The Youth Group also would hold communion on youth trips. It’s the intent of the action. No denomination holds it alone.

Yes, my stepmom could not take communion in the Catholic Church because she was divorced and then married to my dad. But when he died, they took $25 a month from her to pray him to heaven.

And yeah as a PROTESTANT you can take your communion anywhere really. We reserve the Eucharist because it’s not just communion, it’s holy communion
