conversely, my doctor and parents didn’t put me on anything, and I struggled greatly throughout school as a result. Meanwhile, I had friends who were on medicine and they did way better than me academically.

The whole thing is that it’s more than what is normal, by the time your child is 4, they should be reaching milestones, they should also be meeting checkpoints for emotional management, impulse control, hyper fixations etc. and a psychologist who has studied the field, and can probably provide more information on what’s disordered vs what’s lil above average. Case by case basis tho malpractice happens everywhere and at all levels of care.

Medication is absolutely over-prescribed especially at young ages (where the best option is low dose medication combined with therapy, or therapy alone), but for people who don’t get diagnosed until they’re older and have built habits, medication is a totally safe and valid form of treatment, especially if it helps fix other problems in the process associated with ADHD like anxiety and depression.
