I've worked part time retail for 12+ years and it's always been a thing for people 16-25. your brain has just been through a lot and now you're navigating a new world. it's like when your at the DR office looking at your mom every time the Dr ask you a question but now you don't have your mom there to help you. yes it is real but I don't think it's just a recent Gen z thing. it's a young adult trying to navigate a new world and we need to remember our awkward stage when we entered adult life. and it's definitely not all gen z

one customer tried to lecture me on how i don't know isn't an answer and my eyes were half lidded the whole time. that's when i space out, when they start lecturing. ask nicely, don't lecture and i'll help. it's that simple

my best friend's little brother is finally old enough for us to be comfortable letting him hang around, I (27) asked him (20) where he parked when he came over so i could make sure my wife could go to work and he just got wide eyed and stared at his phone for almost a full 30s before slowly looking to me and replying. it dont happen often, but every generation has their own name for the thousand yard stare lol

I could move on if the older generations just admitted that they are fixating on individual interactions and projecting that fixation onto the whole generation. Like no it’s not a “Gen Z stare” it’s a mean girl stare, a processing issue stare, a lead paint stare, a social anxiety stare, etc. It’s NEVER unique to a generation

listen to the teachers and professors who have been dealing with 20+ gen z at a time. I think a lot of times it happens when there is more than 1 gen z together. Someone says something to them and no one wants to take the initiative at answer, just hoping the others will. So they just stare. It has happened to me when I tutor or when I took a class with people 5 years younger than me. Teacher asks the class something and I am sitting there smiling, nodding, to acknowledge, and everyone else is just silently staring. The teacher is waiting for a verbal response so I am like "yes" and then the teacher turns to me "thank you". It's like the bystander affect where none of them wants to make the first move.

yeah, dude, it's totally less effort to believe collectively thousands of people are magically bandwagoning and making shit up, and reporting having very similar experiences with younger people, instead of admitting some members of genz have been poorly socialized thanks to being chronically online and raised by iPads. The whole point is that it's so stupid that it had no rational explanation, and that's precisely WHY it's weird as shit and we're talking about it. You don't have to believe me, and that is totally fine, but it happened literally 2 days ago. I was at an estate sale with my mom, and we are in line next to a kid in maybe his mid 20s. My mom asks him a question, he looks at me, looks at her, and then asks me a question like she didn't even say anything. he never answered her question, and then started talking to her later like nothing even happened. It's weird as hell and when it happens to you, youll know EXACTLY what is.
