Impression. Sunrise, by Claude Monet 👨🏻‍🎨 French painter 🖌 Impressionism 🕰 13 November 1872 🏛 Musée Marmotan Monet, Paris If this painting sparked such strong emotions when it was first hung in Nadar's former studio on the Boulevard des Capucines in Paris in 1874, it was probably because it pushed the evolution of landscape painting further forward and demonstrated a new kind of reverence for nature. It shows how landscape painting, now dominated by a desire for realism, had changed since the 1830s, and demonstrates an eagerness to represent nature as the eye actually sees it. Whereas his predecessors used to paint in studios using sketches made outdoors, Monet went further and painted directly in the open air: here, at the entrance to the port of Le Havre. He made his painting in just a few hours, seeing this as the only way to accurately capture what he saw on canvas. He was particularly interested in rendering the early morning mist that gave the Normandy port such a ghostly air. Impression, Sunrise is a painting of what the eye sees: some would call it a painting of observation. A painting of atmospheric and sky-borne phenomena, it masterfully illustrates the accomplishment of the realist aspirations of landscape painters.
