It refers to Native American culture - if they gave you a gift they expected you to give them something in return. Over the years it got misinterpreted and became defined as someone who gives a gift then takes it back

It’s when the colonizers gave native Americans access to land (mind you, their OWN land) but then kicked them off that land. They had to make it federal law that reservation land couldn’t be taken back…although there is all kinds all nonsense that happens on that land that is against native law. It’s unconscionable

I believe its a colonial term referring to Native Americans. they shared their land and then opposed coloniser settlements - the Europeans saw that as "taking it back" 🙄
