@todayshow: Exclusive: The parents of Ethan Chapin, who was among four University of Idaho students killed in an off-campus residence in 2022, are speaking out after Bryan Kohberger pleaded guilty to their murders earlier this month in a deal that evaded a potential death penalty at trial. NBC's Liz Kreutz reports on their exclusive conversation. #TODAYShow
I have so much respect for Ethan's mom. The way she holds herself is so admirable. I could never.

The parents who wanted a trial were only thinking of themselves and their hatred. They aren't thinking how painful a trial would be for the other families.

I hope Kaylee’s family can find this peace for themselves.

This is only my personal opinion but I feel like getting a death sentence is a cop out. Once the criminal is put to death I feel like that’s it. But if they have to spend their whole life in jail it’s way worse. They have to live with themselves in a small cell forever replaying the life they gave up because of the havoc they created. Eating poorly, being treated like a second class citizen. Getting targeted by people in the jail. I respect others opinions but that’s mine.

Each parent has their own right to feel how they want to. These parents were also looking out for their sons triplets - the weight of a trial would have torn them even more. They’re ready to start to coping and healing the best they can. ❤️❤️❤️

There is ALWAYS a possibility that the defendant will walk. Juries are unpredictable. At least this gives them some justice and closure - and ensures he never hurts anyone else ever again.

Knowing that Hunter and Maisie were subpoenaed makes their response make a lot of sense. It broke my heart when she told the story about them vowing to tell people they’re twins instead of triplets if anybody asks.

So many cases like this the prosecution misfires and the perp gets off. This was the right thing.

So basically, they don't care why this happened? They're making jokes about the guy who slaughtered thier son going to prison. I haven't seen two parents this cold since John & Patsey Ramsey.

I see it from all sides. I personally would need to know why it all happened. But I also understand that knowing why doesn’t bring their son back, and there is no way to move on whilst you are struggling to find an understanding for why it happened

The Chapins are an incredibly strong and amazing family. The consideration for all of the other kids who would have to relive the trauma of that day tells me all I need to know about them. This plea deal was the best option to protect everyone from further trauma and YEARS of appeals.

they’re so stoic & just want to heal. she’s absolutely correct; if they keep this hatred in their heart, it only hurts them. yes, i’m sure they want to know why, but it won’t bring Ethan back. plus, IMO the reason is out there.

The prosecution misled this poor lady. BK still has some things he can appeal. You cannot strip someone of all their rights. This is just the beginning. This lady’s dissociation is frightening. Stay tuned 💯

Nobody should judge any of these families for their differing opinions of how this has played out. They’re entitled to process this horrific tragedy in their own way.

I think everyone handles things very different. These families weren’t friends. They all handle things very different. There is no bringing these sweet kids back. This family has two other kids involved in the situation. It’s good to hear other family’s take on it. Never would have looked at it like I did, until i watched the documentary. I was bummed about the prosecution settling but can totally see why this is a better deal for their family. ♥️I hope this helps with be able to move on and learn how to live again.

I am not in their shoes, but I can’t imagine him getting the death penalty would help them feel any better. Plus the option of him being acquitted would be horrible. I understand they don’t get to know what happened or why, but short of him testifying which I’m sure he would probably not, they won’t know the real story anyway. Glad they can move on and have their peace.

You have to understand, their 2 remaining kids would’ve had to relive the traumatic death of their triplet directly in front pf the person who savagely murdered him. That’s terrifying! The Gonzalves didn’t have to worry about that. They just had to sit and listen to all the evidence.

After watching the prime documentary, you see how traumatized the kids are who went over to the house that morning. I can’t imagine what it would have been like for them to have to testify and for all of the country to be watching them.

The appeals are the biggest thing. It’s done, 100%. Appeals can go on for decades, and go not in the way you want. That seems like agony.

Plus, he doesn't get to be the center of attention for months and the families don't have to relive this over again.
