@wallakelseyy: pls give your 2 cents if you’re a swimmer/triathlete and have felt this anxiety before. I want to get over it 😭😭 #swimming #triathlon #triathlete #swim #fyp
I just did my first sprint tri this last weekend and was definitely more freaked out by not being able to see in the water than I thought. I wish I would’ve practiced in open water more. Maybe start in shallow open water so you can touch and get used to the feeling of it. My swim definitely took a lot of self reassurance and positive thoughts!

Lifelong swimmer here. The water at 4 feet is the same at 12 feet. Trust your own strength and work on calm mindset in the water, maybe even work on some floating! Put a speedo snorkel on and just “dead man’s float” for 5 minutes and see how you feel 🤍

Open water swimmer here. If the goal is to swim for a triathlon, I would highly recommend finding a swim instructor to help you practice in the open water. Open water swim is way different. Especially in a race, get some experience doing open water with someone that has that experience. Going back to the pool

Exactly what you just said, practice practice practice. Switch pools - stay at the 12 foot pool now, you did it today and you did it! Keep going. You got this. Keep challenging yourself. It’s ok to be uncomfortable, live in the discomfort 🫶💪

You’re already on your way! One of the hardest things about swimming is keeping oneself calm. When I feel myself getting anxious in open water, I focus on my technique and reassure myself that I can do it. After only a few clean rhythmic strokes, I calm down and forget I was ever anxious

learning to swim and recently switched from a 3-6ft pool to 3-10ft pool and I also panicked! I started treading water in the deep end for like 30 seconds (to feel *safe*) before swimming back which helped! but I feel you on the open water... I had a nightmare about it last night which made my swim absolute shit at the pool this morning

Maybe when you first get in you could start the swim off using a kick board, then kick with your face in (holding onto bottom of board), then swim.. this progression might make the depth feel less intimidating!!

College swimmer here! Personally I always remind myself that if you can swim in shallow water, you can swim in deep water. In the end water is water, and you have the skills. Also deeper pools help you swim faster and better, so know that it’s actually helping you! :)

Also training for a sprint tri! I grew up swimming so it’s def the easier of the 3 sports for me, but I am an anxious girlie! The pool I’ve been swimming at is 10ft and the first time I swam in it I FREAKED out. But I eventually got used to it and even noticed this morning it wasn’t giving me as much anxiety. And I’m also terrified for the open water swim - I’ve been not opening my eyes under the water lol.

Hi! I’m a lifeguard, swim instructor, and a swimmer, and I would love to help you! Do you know how to tread water? When I teach lessons and people get scared of the water that they can’t stand in, a lot of the time they can’t tread water/ meaning they don’t feel truly safe and secure in the water!
