My first superhero comic was a page by page upload of young avengers vol. 2 on tumblr. So yeah you can absolutely start anywhere and pirating is 100% an option. The first comics I bought were 2 random JLI comics from a thrift store because I recognized booster gold from his episode of JL: Unlimited. So not knowing anything about buying is also fine to start.

My very first comic was the very last issue of Flashpoint. No idea what was going on, why Atlantis and the Amazons were fighting, but Zoom has been stuck in my head ever since and he’s my favorite hater to this day

a lot of advice told me I needed to start from way back in the character history and that didn't help me because I found the paneling and art style not to my taste. you can start with modern runs you don't need to go back 20 years they've made a lot of new introductory lines

I just randomly picked up one from the library about the XMen and it was really good I recently bought my first comic to which was a Star Wars one too at Pride because one of my ships gets married in it. I tend to get a lot of mine from the library to read, because they tend to have a lot, and I can request what they don’t have, like all star Superman which I haven’t read yet.
