one email sent, that’s enough work for today! or is it? does emailing equate to productivity? is it ever okay to…not respond to some emails? here is my analysis from experience… “every email you receive, you should respond to. everybody deserves a response…just any response, the best response you can give” were the words of one of my first managers - we worked in the public sector. as a people pleaser, I embraced this email advice. years later, I found myself working in a tech company. my manager had…decades of experience: any big tech company — you name it, she has it under her belt. “you don’t owe everyone a response, Pasha. just because someone emailed you, it doesn’t mean that you should drop everything…to respond to them” she said. at that point, I was on a speedy people pleaser recovery journey and her advice resonated with me. her argument is that during the day, you have lots of priorities - many are conflicting. someone’s email is…just one of those items whose priority you have to weigh against other tasks. and often, certain emails, are not worthy of responding to immediately, or ever. as a person emailing someone, I want a response. it’s nature - we are all human, we all deserve a response…we all seek…to be acknowledged. we deserve respect. but as workers, we are all…falling apart with every minute. one more email, and we will be resting in…pieces. should we work overtime just because someone deserves a response? now. which manager do you agree with - tech corpoeate or public sector? and where do you stand on this? I do not feel strongly about either side…and my thoughts are…we need to consider: - who the stakeholder is and the context of the email - attitude and the language used in email - my priorities and state of things of the day so yes, one email sent - that’s enough work for today! at the end of the day, unless sending emails is in your KPIs, the number of emails you send does not define you and your productivity xoxo #jobs #comedy
