that's called a displacement behavior. he's having really big feelings and doesn't know what to do with them so he grabs something, in this case the hat

maverick my golden does the same thing. every time I come in the house he has to find something. if its not folded laundry it's pillow or even a toy. golden are absolutely sweetest breed. its just the hair that kills me. EVERYWHERE. lol.
