it legitimately activates an alarm in my brain that says I have to argue against the compliment because to do otherwise would be perpetuating the "misunderstanding" and exploiting their poorly formed opinion of me, and someone would inevitably call me out on it and expose me as a fraud. It's so cool.

yeah, when girl says something nice to you, you are sure that she wants something from you, mocking or don't serious at all. Most common beeing first scenario. On the other hand, when guys do that, you know that's genuine and while that's such a rare thing it feels like you are on a place other person should be😞

I once left a voice message in the group chant and the people told me I had a nice voice; I kinda flipped out because I thought they were being sarcastic, but then I completely infependantly got the same compliment and realized that ho shit they actually meant it.
