@corporatenatalie: It’s 2025, and I still hear about companies - sometimes quietly, sometimes blatantly - not hiring women. And every time, it stings. Check out our interview with Colleen Pelly on @Demoted where we unpack all of this and more (linked in my bio!) #hiringwoman #dei #corporate #recruiting #podcastclips
This is such a hard topic. As someone who was on a performance plan for the first time ever while hiding I was pregnant, it can be a very toxic place to be in. Sure there are companies and leaders who are better at supporting, but at the end of the day it’s a constant battle with how to show up best in both areas (motherhood and work) and having the right support and leaders who understand that you can do both, but there’s nuance to it all

This is an interesting take! When I was interviewing, I felt like not having an engagement ring was a disadvantage by making me seem too young!

My female boss asked how much of the maternity leave I was going to take… um… all of it?

My company was extremely supportive through IVF and pregnancy and leave, definitely not my experience! My male bosses were extremely supportive every step of the way, hired mat leave coverage and gave me a flexible return schedule. This isn’t always the case!!

Oh yes I was pregnant twice at the same company and my boss who is a woman was mistreating me a lot. I had a really tough pregnancy and she reported that I am not doing my job well and I was let go when I was 6 months pregnant.

Nat 🇨🇦 :
At my last employer, every single woman in management who got pregnant, was “re-assigned” upon return from maternity leave. Since the new position was technically a lateral move, there was nothing anyone could do but the message was very clear - there was no room for us in management and there was no possibility of further career progression with them.

Working for an American company but based in Sweden. Management was a bit surprised at my 10-month maternity leave but they have been very supportive and my career is still going great✨

Not to be depressing, but it only gets worse. Then you have to hide that you have kids.

I mentioned wanting to have kids in the near future in my second interview. They hired me and 10 months later I was married and pregnant, unfortunately lost that pregnancy and another one after, but I am currently 19 weeks and I’ve been there for 2.5 years. They’ve been really cool about it. We do have strict rules about discrimination in Denmark, vir they can always find a way to make it about something else. Also not wanting to hire engaged women just pisses me off, because men they are married are considered more competent.

Like for real we go out for like 3 months for maternity leave. I once promoted a woman a week before she went into labor and people were shocked.

Once I hit my late 30s I didn’t mind saying my age because I think it reassured people that I was most likely done having kids

I will add. Once a woman turns 40 ageism is real and it impacts your career.

Once a male interviewer said sooo you are an excellent fit for the role but …you said you are getting married and well we want the person in this role to be here long term so I just hope you don’t run off and get pregnant

This is what sucks about being a woman, damned if you do and damned if you don’t! Unmarried you’re looked at as too young/not dependable. Engaged/married has them look at you like you won’t stay. Women in the work force still have so much indirect adversity and it’s already hard enough to get a job
