coriander I believe is based on the french word, whereas cilantro is based on the Spanish. The UK has more ties historically to France than Spain, whereas the USA is heavily influenced by Mexico (a Spanish speaking country)

Are most people *really* not understanding though? Isn't it more of a reaction of "oh, that's not the word we use here"? American media is so ubiquitous (at least for me growing up in the 90's) that I'm familiar with all the Americanisms mentioned here. Plus there's usually context cues to aid bridging an understanding. My experience is that us Brits enjoy pointing out fun little differences like this and being pedantic 😂
