what if the pole i use has a old reel that only has drag after flipping a switch under the reel (once you flip the switch the handle also spins as drag is pulled)

That’s the incorrect way to check your drag you need to hook your line to a fence post or something and pull your pole up in the air with the bend of the pole to activate the drag correctly

no gears are getting grinded by reeling when drag is going out. your drags are getting unnecessary additional wear but that's about it

Agree totally with 2 & 3. I set my drag medium. Learn the hard way by snapping lines on big fish. Point 1, maybe. I can see your point but I think is a judgement call considering conditions.
