my struggle is finding writing groups outside of college and finding people who want to write as a career/enter tradpub.

I agree with everything you say. However… Writing groups don’t work for me. Therefore I have chosen to work one-on-one with other authors. To that end, I created pages on my website describing what I am looking for and how to approach me. To date, I have discovered several excellent critique partners and am confident that I will find several more.

Yes to all of this 💛 I would be utterly lost without my critique partners. I also think it’s important (where possible) to try to find critique partners with similar writing abilities and goals. If there’s too much disparity (in either direction) it can leave you feeling overwhelmed or like you’re not using your time as effectively as you could.

The only downside is that a lot of people give awful advice and cannot write

Joining a writing group has been a game changer for my writing! Mine goes into character interviews, world building, writing craft, and other helpful posts, then we share a snippet on Saturdays. Then we do critique partners (2-3 people) for 3 month sessions. It’s soooo helpful! I’ve had more progress in the last 6 months than I have the previous 1.5 years because of the accountability!

This makes so much sense! I’ve been planning to hand off to my critique partner after finishing draft 2, hopefully that’s early enough

joining a writing group completely changed my writing journey for the better—even as an editor, spending time with other writers and not “clients” is a totally different environment and so much more helpful!! it’s nice to not be the one always giving critique and advice, i can actually talk to people on a peer-to-peer level

Plus it can be rewarding to get feedback early on and find out “oh they all only said things I already knew” it makes it feel like it’s not as bad as you think because they aren’t pointing out things you missed. This happened for me and it made me feel significantly better

Is it more helpful to be in a group that reads your genre only or a mix of genres?

How formal do you recommend writing groups to be? I have one person I meet regularly with and a smattering of other people I talk to less consistently but we still share work and thoughts. I’m wondering if I need to try and coalesce what I have going on to something more formal.

When writing a scene how do you transition from being very descriptive and in the moment to zoomed out and just telling what happens as the time passes?

how do I draw more people into my writing group? 🤔 I have the same three (including me) always attending and I feel like our feedback to each other is getting stale. (some others come and go)

I see a lot of people online who share first drafts of their first paragraph/page/chapter for feedback before they continue writing, and this feels unhelpful, at best. That may be where some of the confusion about feedback comes from.
