@doc_martin_gp: This post is not a sob story looking for sympathy, but it has come from a point of frustration when I hear GPs being accused of working part time when they are actually doing a 44 hour week! And even the fact that it is an accusation, which it so often is, shows a prejudice towards part time working. Some GPs work 2 days a week, which is part time (it would be about a 30 hour week) but surely that is ok? We must fight against the stigma that is attached to part time working as somehow not fulfilling your moral obligation to society! The truth is that very few GPs work more than 3 days a week of coal face GP work, because that really is the new full time and any more is not sustainable over a career. We need the BMA and the government to recognise this, and, most of all, we need the support and understanding of our patients. Thank you for listening and understanding. Maybe share this post with your own GP if you can, or give them a shout out in the comments. And for fellow GPs out there, however many sessions you work, you are doing an amazing job! 😊❤️👏 #gplife #gp #generalpractice #doctor #medicine #familypractice

There is need to justify doing the minimum.

If you're working 44 hours, you should get paid for 44 hours regardless whether it's 4 or 5 days.

I’ve worked for a lot of GPs and most worked close to 15 hour days on average. I don’t think people appreciate what goes on behind the scenes either ie home visits or emergencies ect that they often have to do in their “own” time ie breaks ect

Wow. How condescending. As if your experience is anything other than normal for most of us. Speak to Teachers, Cops etc etc. Be available 5 days a week and do house calls like your predecessors used to. And stop the elitism by training more doctors so GP practices can function properly.

I dont think people who havent worked in NHS or with the NHS realise the amount of non clinical work is involved. the jobs isn't 100% physically dealing with patients

So if the surgery is open for appointments from 9am until 4pm what are they doing the rest of the time. The waiting room is empty, you can't get an appointment.

Im a GP and why are you making it ok and justified for yourself to cut your real time wages by 3/4 for the same amount of work??? "I'm not complaining about that" my question is why are you not complaining about that , it's just so odd. Almost martyrdom. It's because of guys like you and lack of militancy and backbone that we are in the mess we are in. No doubt you'll hide behind "I'm not in it for the money" or some other bullshit reason you feed yourself.

Regrettably, I feel you are incorrect. I think GP's work maybe 2/3 days NHS, and the remaining day private.

My practice only allow us to work 6 sessions as a salaried GP as they don’t think it’s safe to work more than that 👏 (just don’t get paid enough so have to locum extra elsewhere to pay the bills) - but hate when people say we work part time! My 6 sessions are about 40 hours

I worked in software development for 40 years. I often worked 10 hour days for no extra pay, often 7 days a week for no extra pay. I once worked 36 hours non stop for no extra pay because I had a deadline. There are many, many professionals like me. Why do you think you’re special?

If you're doing the same hours, why would your pay drop? You've reallocated the hours not dropped the amount of hours you work 🙈 unsure on the logic that's all

It’s because it’s too mentally exhausting speaking with so many different individuals every day. Some people take a little longer to recharge after such tasks. I work less so I’m less exhausted and better at my job clinically and interpersonally

I know a local surgery taken over by NHS hospital. They went in a massive loss paying so many drs to do admin. No salaried NHS dr would sort more than 1 problem/appt and claimed for 1.5 overtime pay outside 9-5. Handed it back to GP after a year of over 3 times the cost and poor performance. I dont blame the NHS employed drs, why will they do home visits in lunch time, why stay till 8 to sort results for no extra pay? But contracted GPs will do so...don't know why! I wait for the day GPs are employed by the NHS directly.

The admin should be done by AI. And initial consulting by AI too. It’s far far more accurate for diagnosing problems. I’d get rid of most doctors and replace with much cheaper and effective AI. Far better health outcomes

Didn’t really explain why you compressed your hours, lots of us would like to work less days longer hours but we have to work when business needs us

You should be doing 40 hours a week over 5 days not an hour more end of.
