Potd=paper of the day meaning that I’m gonna read at least ONE paper every workday. Makes it a whole lot less stressful and I tend to understand them more deeply

Ngl I treat all papers like hot gossip from high school and that helps me remember important points (but I’m also in the humanities so this could be why)

Honestly smart collections and tags in Zotero can be a game changer. Also, I recommend utilizing the notes tab in Zotero for rapid-fire information as it’s way easier to search

I’m convinced my brain is broken because I can’t use online documents to collect notes. I HAVE to physically write them. It adds so much time, but I feel like I’m better at synthesizing my ideas🫠

I skim articles and if they are relevant I save them in Zotero folder. After I find a decent amount of articles, I go back to read them and start an annotated bibliography in a word doc. I do this for each topic I'm researching.

I make a spreadsheet with columns for authors, year, title, study type, sample characteristics, sample size, exposure/treatment, outcome of interest, results (significant or no), and notes/points of interest. Fill it out with the BAREST bones of info

You don’t need every detail from every paper and you don’t need to get everything the first time you read a paper! also I anthropomorphize everything (so my protein that I work with is a girl and she’s really cliquey and needs to be with a least one other girl (Dimerized protein) or with her friend group (tetrameric protein)

read the entire intoduction - this will almost always breakdown what each section/chapter is about. read the first and last sentences of each section to determine if you *need* to read that section in depth. Read the entire conclusion to ensure you didn't miss the key ideas of the work.

I’ve stopped giving nearly as much effort in grad school unfortunately BUT sometimes I would have a separate sheet of paper/doc w topics and then every time a paper mentioned that topic I’d list the authors on the mass doc

I got a giant venti coffee at a sit down Starbucks, all of my headphone, different color high lighters, and then highlighted all like terms and how it all connected and then I wrote Google docs. And so I could summarize each literature review and lock in.

I make a matrix for every paper; including quotes, synthesis, in text citation (for later) and outline tags by theme. Then when constructing the paper I cut and paste the all quotes & synthesis into my outline by searching for the tags.

I got fed up with Zotero and Paperpile bc they got too slow once I had like 300 sources 🫠. I started using Obsidian instead, and I really like it, but there is a bit of a learning curve because you embed things using Markdown or JavaScript

I made an excel spreadsheet summarizing over 100 relevant papers (after skimming 500 papers to see if they were relevant). Each row a paper, each column an attribute/variable measured in the paper. Most columns are binary coded (1= it measured variable x, 0= no it didn’t). Then when writing I can refer to the spreadsheet to see which papers found that y decreased with x? How many of these studies took place in North America versus elsewhere etc. Auto-color cells by values so it’s easier to read the sheet (zero=blank, one=colored).

HUGE SPREADSHEET. Each article has a row and the columns are the different topics. Put relevant quotes/notes with page numbers as you go.

First page last page three pages in the middle, scale for long papers. You want a little intro context, a little methods, and a little key findings in the conclusion. Keep a running list of quotes and bullet point your thoughts as you read, be sure to include pg#s. Then, turn the bullets into sentences, rearrange as needed, and you have a full paper w citations. Use Google translate or some other AI/accessibility tool to read your paper out loud to catch grammar & spelling errors, but at least a day after first write so you have space to genuinely evaluate your work. If the papers you’re reading are boring, treat your notes like texting gossip to your best friend. I also keep a water bottle with a chewy straw to make sure I’m hydrated without thinking about it, and sometimes I play Minecraft music in the background to help me focus without silence or distraction

Come up with a note taking system so that you are pulling the same kind of info from each article. (Methods, findings, etc) It makes it much easier to compare across articles when all of your notes look similar and you can see the main takeaways from each article
