@thebollmanbunch: andddd then I’m not sending a 17 year old to college either #redshirting #redshirtingkindergarten #kindergarten #delayingkindergarten
As a summer birthday myself, I am SOOO glad my parents did NOT redshirt me. Only do so if it is developmentally necessary. Otherwise you’re just putting your kid behind. They aren’t supposed to know everything for the grade yet, they are there to learn, that’s the whole point.

I didn’t know there was a term for it! We did it for my son and I have no regrets. He finished K back in the spring at the top of his class. If he had gone the year before I really think he would’ve been held back. We plan on doing the same thing for my almost 3yo who has an August birthday.

I went to college at 17 and it wasn’t a big deal at all! I was 4 turning 5, also a September birthday. My brother was a September birthday too and my mom had him repeat kinder. It totally depends kiddo to kiddo.

This is great, but if you are a parent to a younger soon to be kindergartener, don’t worry your kid will catch up if they are a little behind. Some kids go into kindergarten not knowing any letters and they learn them quickly! I won’t be able to red shirt my son and I know he will be fine

As an august child, I did have some learning struggles. I was emotionally mature though. If I was redshirted.. I don't think I would have met my husband ❤️. If I had an august baby, I think I would have to see where they are development wise.

I believe our cut off is August 31 so I didn’t feel the need to redshirt him because he’ll be 6 in Oct. we didn’t have the choice to put him in at 4 turning 5 which I’m grateful for

My 2 yr old will be in 3 yr old pre k this year but he will also take it again next year and then move on. So he will have an extra yr of pre k and still be the oldest in his class. (He's autistic so we have done meetings and think this will help his foundation for leaning)

I think it depends on the support of learning at home. I was born July 22nd and graduated at 17. But, both of my parents were teachers that taught me some kindergarten skills and my babysitter had experience teaching her own kids with learning disabilities so I was on track/early with all my learning because of that. But my experience is super different compared to someone with a late birthday that doesn’t have the resources available to them to grow and learn ahead. If that support isn’t available, then 100% redshirt. If it is, it’s knowing where your child is compared to the oldest ones in the class and giving them the extra resources and support AT HOME to catch up if needed.

my sons a late july birthday and i always planned on doing this! thennn i started teaching preschool which totally changed my mind as an educator. my sons flourished in school so far, and im glad i didnt, but the important thing is listening to your child’s developmental markers! if they’re not ready give it another year 100%, it’s totally beneficial for a lot of kids. but if they’re ready holding the child back can cause regression and behavioral issues.

i think it's v kid-dependent! our cutoff was 9/1 and my bday is 10/16. i went early and i was still developmentally and academically ahead of most of my grade

my oldest is starting kindergarten and he just turned 5. I had thought we were going to do another year of prek but his teacher thinks he’s more than ready for kindergarten based on his scores of the testing they did.

We’ve been thinking about this. Our daughter is a July baby. She just turned 3 and she is recognizing letters when we are out and about (especially the letter her name starts with) and knows 98% of her letters. She has always been able to pick things up really quickly. I think it depends on each kid if they need to wait a year or if they don’t. We will be talking with her school if they think she will do well starting kindergarten or waiting a year.

I am a 1st grade teacher. It doesn’t matter how “academically ready” the child is. Socially and emotionally, you can always tell who is a late summer birthday. Giving your child one more year of childhood vs one more year of adulthood is a gift!

I do think this is depending on your child. I think if they’re emotionally ready as my son was, there’s no problem being the youngest. The cut off in Colorado is October 1, so mine was 4 in Kinder but again he’s a very regulated kiddo (not like his sis lol 😆)

I was born in July and so happy my parents didn’t do this! Lots of girls are really mature and it’s not always the best solution
