@lupitanyongo: This Fibroid Awareness Month and beyond, I hope my experience will resonate with anyone else who has ever felt dismissed, confused or alone. And I hope to seek answers for the far too many women dealing with uterine fibroids (80% of black women and 70% of white women by age 50!). We deserve better. It's time to demand it. Silence serves no one! Here’s where I’m beginning ➡️ 1. Today, I joined Congresswomen Shontel Brown, Yvette Clarke, Bonnie Watson Coleman, Robin Kelly and Senators Angela Alsobrooks and Lisa Blunt Rochester in Washington DC to introduce a package of uterine fibroid Congressional bills. These bills would expand research funding, increase early detection and interventions for uterine fibroids, study the causes of uterine cancer, and increase public awareness. 2. In partnership with the Foundation for Women's Health, I'm launching the FWH x Lupita Nyong’o Uterine Fibroid Research Grant. FWH will seek research proposals to develop minimally invasive or non-invasive treatments for uterine fibroids to reduce symptoms and improve quality of life for the 15 million patients suffering from this chronic condition in the U.S. alone. Learn more and get involved at the link in my bio. #fibroids #womenshealth

I had 1 fibroid when I was in my early 30s. Size of a pea. No issues at all. Then a few years later I got pregnant and I got another one. While my daughter was growing they were growing. I was high risk for my entire pregnancy and had to get sonograms once a month. Thankfully had a healthy 7 pound, 13 ounces baby.

I have three fibroids. They are very small, controlled by hormones, and monitored annually. I was told it was something that showed up when you were older (I was in my 40s). I had no idea younger women got them.

They’re still cutting us without anesthesia 😩 I had a uterine biopsy and was wondering why they made me wait till the clinic was literally empty. It was so no one would hear me screaming

they doctors are so mean to us. I'm afraid of going to a gyno cause all of my experiences were so humiliating and painful and they never solved anything. I was on a check up last year and the doctor told me I should stop my treatment for chronic pain cause it's time for me to have a child. I'm 25 and I don't want kids. she insisted I'm immature for that opinion. so would the "mature" thing to do would be to suffer in pain to bring a child I don't want into the world? it's honestly so hard to force yourself to go to the clinic when you know that's how they treat you. and for my own money might I add!

By the time I was 18, I had already been to the hospital 10 times. Each visit ended the same way—they told me I just had “really bad periods.” Even though I had ultrasounds every time, no one looked deeper.
It wasn’t until I was 19 and saw my regular doctor that things shifted. He casually asked me what I was doing about my cancer. I was completely blindsided—I had no idea what he was talking about. He urged me to see my OBGYN immediately. I did, and that week she told me I needed a hysterectomy.
I got a second opinion, and thankfully, another doctor was able to remove the fibroids without removing my uterus. Since then, I’ve had three more surgeries—they just kept growing back.
Then last year, after bleeding nonstop for six months, I decided to go through with a partial hysterectomy.
Fibroids are no joke. And honestly, I still don’t understand why women have to suffer this much just to be heard.

My doctors told me that fibroids were fully normal and most women have them (so basically, stop complaining.) When one reached 22cm, a new doctor finally said “wow, we have to do something about it.” Surgery in two months. Wish me luck.

Naturopathic Medical Doctors KNOW fibroids are preventable…women’s health is severely compromised and understudied and it is our job to take the power back

I remember when they said I had them and didn't really explain it at all. Said they thought I might have Endo when I was a teenager also didn't explain anything. I went to the ER for such bad pelvic pain I could barely move and they just said I had a cyst didn't give me anything for it just said that's why I was in pain and sent me home. Ended up needing surgery because they thought it could be cancer. Spent 6 months waiting for said surgery and had to have it during covid time so it took even longer so I could be tested etc before hand. I was also given birth control pills with estrogen for my irregular periods when I was like 12. Didn't know until recently you can't take birth control with estrogen if you have migraines with aura which has been on my medical chart since I was around 9. Had no idea that's why I was passing out and having such extreme migraines.

If you have period pain that requires more than a few Motrin PLEASE get screened for endo or other issues like this. My wife just found out she had stage 4 endo at 38 and it has been extremely difficult to try to get any eggs since it overtook her ovaries. Get an ultrasound if you have bad periods girls!!

My mom had a large fibroid tumor in 2008, they said it would shrink, not to worry. She just had a full hysterectomy for endometrial cancer which the dr also took out the 17 year old tumor…the size of a softball. We aren’t listened to enough when it comes to our female health issues.

I recently had a hysterectomy due to massive uterine fibroids. Mine were so large you couldn't see them entirely on the MRI and ultrasound. I was told they only grow 1-1.5cm each year. One of mine was over 20cm.

There is nothing normal about irregular periods or back pain so severe that you can barely breathe. I am fortunate because I had a gyno who worked with me to find a solution because I didn’t want to have a hysterectomy. In March 2014, I had a uterine embolization. I can’t tell you how life changing it was. I have had no issues with fibroids since.

My huge fibroid put me in hospital for 4 days. I was bleeding so heavily for so long that I had no blood or strength left. After my 3rd fainting episode, my husband called an ambulance. I had 2 units of blood plus iron infusion in vein. Finally I had it removed, thogether with a cyst in my ovary. The worst 8 moths but now I left all that behind. 👍🏼

I had to have a hysterectomy at 33 because of endo/fibroids/cysts. I was in pain for most of my life and doctors told me to take ibuprofen or have a baby to make the endo stop

I had surgery for a grapefruit size fibroid last year, I was told they are reoccurring and would probably come back in a couple years. It took me months to even realize what was going on. No one really talks about women’s health. Hopefully this changes in the future.

The timing of seeing this! I have 3 with one being 25cm. They don't think they can save my uterus. Also due to fear of them growing back, I'm getting a hysterectomy. Surgery in 5 weeks

I had 7 removed May 2024 (one the size of a softball). It was only a matter of months before they started growing back.

I was told having an IUD releasing small amounts of hormone to keep the lining thin would help avoid them. No?

Latina over here, I have 15 fibroids, found out because I was severely anemic & had heavy menstrual bleeding. I am now seeing a dr now & have surgery scheduled to remove them. Better education is needed for this!! Never had heard about fibroids until I had my symptoms.
