I also enjoyed her in it but I also hate the idea that sopranos and traditional ingenue voices aren’t seen as intelligent and independent voices because it’s so entrenched in musical theatre stereotypes

no use for a name :
As someone who was raised watching the movie, played Mrs. Paroo when I was 11, saw the revival with Eric McCormack in 2001 AND this production, I thought she was great. Marian is usually played super vanilla and it’s almost like she is book smart but isn’t street smart. I thought Sutton brought life to the role. Made Marian wiser and have more depth. And honestly, if we can except Hugh going flat when he holds notes, we can except a non soprano singing that role. And if we can except Audra singing roses turn in the break in her voice (which I still was captivated by) we can most certainly normalize people acting their selves through a song if they are a strong enough actor.

I absolutely agree with her being a good choice for Marion- I never understood the kerfuffle of her in that role. However- I DID NOT like or care for her in her run as Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd 😬

Having seen both the Music Man with her as well as Sweeney Todd, I liked both a lot! I don’t think she’s perfect for every role but any role that has a side of comedy I think she does really well

My thing was she was too old to play the role. Marian should be significantly younger than Harold especially with the storyline with miser Madison. But that’s me.

I ALSO THOUGHT SHE WAS GREAT. It was a different interpretation than we had seen before and I thought it was VERY effective. I also thought that people get very holier than thou about this one production like it’s going to change how they cast the show forever, which is just silly.
