When a neighbor calls you in the middle of a work day to say they found a kitten in Prospect Park crying and covered in flies, alarm bells immediately go off. First question, how old? Mere hours, with the placenta still attached. Second question, where is the mom? We know that there are a handful of fixed colony cats in this area of the park, but no known intact females. With the fact that this kitten seems to have been purposefully placed on a tshirt right off the pathway in the park, the clearest answer we have is that the mom is not in this area and the kitten must have been brought here. If not taken in, the kitten will not make it through the day. Third question, sh*t, where do we take it? The neighbor who found the kitten needed to get back to work and her kids. I was at work in the city and wouldn't get back fast enough. By some stroke of fate, B of @Carroll.Street.Cat.Club was close by and able to meet the neighbor within 20 mins. Next up was someone experienced to triage this fragile baby. We reached out to the ASPCA kitten nursery, the only dedicated bottle baby center in the city, but they were closed for intake. Through our friends at @Greenpoint_cats we were able to get the kitten into the hands of the very experienced vet tech Emily (who worked at the ASPCA kitten nursery for years) at their partner vet to get the kitten warm and give their first meal. But the clinic closed at 7pm, and they needed somewhere to go from there. We were truly working minute by minute at this stage. That's where the incredible @bayridgekittens comes in. With the offer of a toasty incubator and a watchful eye for their first 48 hours, we knew they would be in good hands. From there? Well, with our known bottle feeding fosters full with other kittens right now, that responsibility fell to us. @carroll.street.cat.club @danaandthecats & @thatsagoodcat are taking this on as a co-parenting project, the baby will spend 2-3 days at each home to spread out the burden of care and try to give this little one their best shot at life.
