@dr.starkid: Interstellar is my favorite movie of all time! And as much as they tried to stick to the science at times, these black hole planets don’t pass radiation test. To be fair Kip Thorne addresses this in “The Science of Interstellar” by fine-tuning the disk to only produce visible light, but that’s not a realistic astrophysical scenario lol Check out the new episode of Curiosity Theory live now! We literally still don’t know how black holes work , not to mention our idea of physics might not be consistent all throughout the universe .

What about one that isnt currently feeding? (no accretion disk) I know the disk gives off a ton, but what about the bl itself?

Who’s to say this planet can’t have a protective atmosphere. I don’t see why it is impossible…

Nolan needed Miller’s Planet to have an atmosphere and be momentarily survivable in order for the “time travel” aspect of being close to the black hole to work. That’s why it works, because plot.😂

Not to mention how the planet could've survived, with its atmosphere in the habitable zone, after the star supernovaed.

I'm pretty sure that's why it's called a science fiction movie. 😉🎩🫡

How can you know it’s wrong if we’ve never found one or been on one.

Didn’t they just recently observe a black hole recently spitting light back out after absorbing it?

While yes, there’s plenty of fiction in Interstellar, I still love that they hired an astrophysicist to do the math behind what black holes look like. Call me a nerd all you want, but physics is hella cool!

There's no such thing as habitable zone near a black hole 😂. Nolan's theory of a black hole system is interesting and probable, but it's simply impossible for humans to live THAT close to a black whole

Funny thing is they show the ship doing a slingshot manuever inside of Gargantua’s accretion disc. If it’s bright enough to light up a planet, it’s hot enough to cook that ship too lol

The accretion disk wouldn’t be stable either, growing/shrinking in size/shape and shooting out jets of material

What methods would be viable to detect these guys? I assume radial velocity is off the table because of the extreme mass differences, but what about transits for sufficiently small black holes?

I have a minimal amount of astrophysics knowledge or background, however if you told me we had a select number of planets to investigate and one of them is extremely close to a black hole (close enough to experience significant time dilation, a fact they knew before the attempt) I'm ruling that one out right away.

How is it that the atmosphere and water could remain on the planet when the gravitational pull was so strong to create a 1 hour to 7 year differential from surface to the spacecraft? I have seen no one address this.

this is my beef with that water world planet: with tides that strong, the rocky surface would be exposed to immense erosional forces. there wouldn't be a flat solid surface to stand on below the water, the ocean bottom would probably be composed of a lot of boulders and gravel, and would be uneven. and even if they were on freshly exposed bedrock, the chances of it being perfectly flat aren't that high. from a geological standpoint this planet made no sense and it irritates me to this day
