As a younger person, I would have definitely sided with the CIA's narrative because it fit my propagandized perception of China. Hell,I did. But now, after witnessing countless protests in the US be co-opted by bad actors, intent on creating violence to ruin the legitimacy of a movement, it's not far fetched at all. Then, once I started learning about CIA ops in other countries, the pattern is literally a stencil, stamped on each scenario.

I think it's important to mention that even if you can search up the massacre in Chinese, stuff like public memorials for those who died are not permitted in China. Also even if nobody died in the square itself that does not make the deaths outside the square less cruel. Especially since part of violence was coming from tanks going to the square or leaving from there. Even if maybe the military then was different than American military protestors stand no chance against tanks. Also there is no specific number of deaths varies for example the Chinese gov said it's 218 civilians PLUS 13 armed police . Other sources like the red cross are talking about more than a thousand dead people so there is no specific known death count. sry English isn't my first language and this is a very complicated topic lol

honestly the main reason why this myth won't go away is the Chinese government suppressing ANY conversation about it no matter what the perspective is. I've talked to many Chinese people and all of them are deeply uncomfortable talking about this subject

The CIA documentary on this is fascinating. Almost everyone in it miraculously became an investment banker in the west. They all openly admit on video they want violence from the government. Somehow we can see burned bodies hung from trees the day before the “massacre” but they never acknowledge it.

People should look into the Mexican student massacre in 1968 which was carried out by US-backed political party, PRI. Since that one would shed light on the lengths the US goes to repress revolution in LATAM, nobody talks about it.

I am old enough to remember watching it on tv and the way it is told today is very different than when it was live. It’s wild to me that young people think that demonstrator was killed or run over. At the time the US news pushed the narrative that it was a powerful demonstration of how people can rise up against military power. Not mentioning the protestors politic, but definitely showing he was able to stop a tank.

great explainer as always, something I think always gets lost is that Tiananmen square is like times square central Park, it's more akin to the white house, capitol hill of the UK parliament building. I can't imagine people occupying the capitol hill steps for weeks and a peaceful resolution to that.
