@littleblossomdarling: have you ever worn a corset while acting in a film or theater performance? or have you made corsets for a film? why do you think this is such a problem? i think one of the other issues here- is that acting is a very physical job! and if you’re used to being able to do that acting in one way adjusting to how to do your job in a whole other way is going to be uncomfortable for sure. #corset #costumedesign #cinderellamovie

Also because actresses are ALREADY thin often there's not much there to lace down you're actually just trying to squish the skeletal structure which is uncomfortable. If you're a bit chunkier the flab can move.

They’re also rarely wearing chemises which is so frustrating to see

My other theory is that they get no chance to season the corsets themselves. They have to have multiple for filming so they are all too new to get comfy.

And you can also see in so many films that the corset is always put against the skin when it’s not meant to be worn like that at all 🫠 it's frustrating, you bet it's not comfortable that way

Absolutely agree on all points. I also think it seems they are often wearing very tight waist reducing corsets even if that wasn't the silhouette of the era they are portraying.

Also for movies they tend to have really long days. 12-16 hours in a corset is a long day.

Or because corsets are generally uncomfortable and now women can actually speak out on that stuff

supportive shoes are also comfortable but not until they are broken in. actors I have worked with have had painful issues due to costuming not thinking about comfort. Its something I have learned to advocate for.

I work in theatre costuming and when we have actresses in corsets, they wear them during the rehearsal process. I rarely hear complaints about discomfort. I think you’re right

i literally lace opera singers into corsets(im a wardrobe tech); ive worried ive laced them too tight and theyll tell me "no can you make it tighter." and sometimes during intermission theyll ask to be loosened which is no big deal. but i dont think its a tight lacing thing. i think, from the films ive worked on, its partially time; 14 hour days and directors will want things that are not possible with corsets or historical sleeves. i worked on a show where they could not lift their arms above their head but the director wanted it so. sometimes it is the actors if they have a big enough sway but i think its normally directors

you're also probably in a different posture than you're used to which can be really uncomfortable. when I started wearing corsets I would get incredibly tense shoulders and pain in my lower back because I was not used to sitting, standing and moving in the way you do when wearing a corset. but now other than not being able to comfortably slouch and cursing the world when I drop things they're so comfortable. or at least not uncomfortable 💕

I was background for a historical movie. The wardrobe department was not educated on wearing corsets and they thought they were doing a favour by only tightening at the waist, not evenly down the back. It was so uncomfortable for the 12-13 h days.

also modern corsets are much HEAVIER than older corsets. abby cox made a video about how a lot of synthetics are heaver and have excess boning instead of relying on types and directions of stitching. she goes into a lot of other problems with modern corsets

I was super uncomfortable in a corset when I asked someone to tighten it for me. I was tight laced and could barely eat a thing, so after that incident. I did it myself and often had a top underneath so I wouldn't accidentally flash my bra to someone

I love the look of corsets but I personally find them too overstimulating, I can't handle tight clothes, and I'm sure other ppl are like that too so sometimes even if a corset is well made it can be uncomfortable for a person anyway

This is honestly a huge part of the reason I want to be a historical costuming consultant for film once I finish my historical fashion degree

One thing I’ll give to the Bridgerton Costume team (who do deserve a lot of credit for creativity and production) they may not always be using the right silhouette for every actress, but they do a good amount of fittings and the stays/corsets are custom made by one of the best corset makers in the world. And I believe except for a lot of the scenes and fittings they do actually get chemises.

Actually i remember seeing an interview from Lily James from Cinderella, where its said it wasnt too bad. That siluette was created by having large hem and fluffy decoltee part to the dress

when I was a body double there was usually only a couple of versions of a costume that had to fit as many of us as possible (I'm a lot bigger than most movie stars). that probably contributed to discomfort rather than true made-to-measure corsetry

Something I have seen is that usually when we see actresses wearing their corset they aren’t wearing anything under it. So the corset is directly on the skin which is wrong and uncomfortable
