thanks for asking about the babies there just running in there dipers but it does sound like he was honest about the work and problem rate is a bit high but thats dealership pricing unless you have a contract or warrenty id check somewere else.

standard. The number of hours for the job is fixed by a governing body and the parts cost with the parts cost in your area. The only variable is the shop hourly rate. If it's 180 there it's going to be close everywhere else.

Full transparency upcharging a timing chain job is something we all do. Now granted a timing chain is part of the core of the engine and is essential to your car’s performance. The labor cost is on the higher end for sure but I won’t recommend buying your own parts because if it fails you will not have a warranty through the shop that did the labor. With all that said the labor appears to be significantly higher but that depends on location as well but a timing chain job typically ranges from about 800 and up for typical cars like Honda civics to about 1500 and up for luxury cars like bmws and Lexus it mainly depends on what engine you have.

we have an MDX Acura and it needs the timing chain changed at 100000 miles they said it's a 1000 -1500. not sure if we just got a great deal but that's what we're paying

Timing belt and timing chains (when they break and you have an interference engine- it bends parts on the engine) so yeah you can call around and get quotes but it’s going to be expensive. Timing belts (70,000 - 100,000 miles) but timing chains tend to outlast timing belts. Regular oil changes can extend life span but replacing before an issue is usually the better option. 😑

They have to drop the engine, and you went to the dealer. As a tech, you're in the right place and that price sounds about right. You can bring it down if you buy your own parts but only if they allow you to buy your own.
