©️ We Are Not Horses: The Conservative Mind's Lack of Imagination By Jannelle Spencer Educator, researcher, and trans woman "A mare can never be a stallion. A trans woman will never be a woman." That’s the solemn refrain of some conservative sectors, unaware that neither their argument is original, nor their logic new. The worst part isn’t that they hate. The worst part is that they do it without imagination. Conservative thought doesn’t argue: it recycles Instead of reasoning, conservative thought clings to borrowed metaphors — misunderstood and stripped of context. Recently, in a transphobic debate, someone cited the show Squid Game, saying: "Horses will never be mares." But had they understood the series, they would know the horse metaphor was actually a critique of dehumanization. One character cried out in pain: "We are not horses! We are human!" Because horses don’t choose. Don’t think. Don’t dream. And yet, that’s exactly how the system treats us: like obedient livestock. And what does conservative thought do? It sides with the horse. With obedience. With hierarchy. With the belief that everything must remain as it is — because old books, old gods, and old fathers once said so. Critical imagination and the yearning for freedom As Herbert Marcuse taught us, emancipatory thought requires radical imagination. To think the unthinkable. To name the unnamed. To dream what doesn’t yet exist. But conservative thought fears imagination. Because imagination questions. And they were taught to obey. Obey the Church. Obey biological essentialism. Obey the father. Obey the norm. And so, when faced with a trans woman who names herself, reinvents herself, and builds her identity from love, they can only respond with horses. When dogma replaces thought Freud said it clearly: what is repressed doesn’t disappear — it becomes a symptom. And the symptom of conservative thought is empty repetition. They don’t reason. They repeat. They don’t analyze. They condemn. They don’t create. They punish. And that’s not morality. It’s a lack of thought. A trans woman destabilizes what they once believed to be “natural.” And since they don’t know how to dialogue, they compare. They dehumanize. They scorn. In the face of their lack of creativity: dignity and tenderness We do not respond with hate. We respond with art, with philosophy, with lived experience, with history. We know we are not horses. Because horses don’t write poetry. Horses don’t teach. Horses don’t fight for just laws. Horses don’t survive exclusion with their heads held high. But we do. Their real fear: that we think for ourselves It’s not that they don’t understand who we are. It’s that they can’t stand that we are not like them. That we don’t repeat. That we don’t obey. That we refuse to live a life in black and white. And so, they misquote a series about freedom to justify chains. They use animal metaphors to deny our humanity. And that’s why we say: “We are not horses. We were not born to drag their dogmas. We were born to live. And that is what we shall do — with imagination, with words, with love.”
