Edgy characters can be fun, but they have to be done well. They have to carry something redeemable that makes people feel empathy, and it's easy to fall into the trap of playing them as rock-skinned with no squishy heart. Most people who play them wrong are either on a power kick, or they just want to seem like a badass Main Character, which is terrible for DND.

LITERALLY my first char’s backstory🤣mum is frozen by a spell, dad’s a demon and ofc he left before she was born, and she’s searching for him for an answer

Flipped the rogue trope ✨ this one comes from a loving thief-family business. Dad's like Ned Flanders if he ran a wholesome criminal empire like a small-town hardware store. Mom's a sweet poison baker and doting housewife. The whole guild’s a cheerful, tight-knit bunch. The rogue? Total emo teen, insists his parents are dead until the party meets them and gets invited in for tea. 😂🥰

Give that character a twin sibling and a neglectful distant father figure (that is alive), then you got something cooking

My current character backstory is he came from a large loving family and never wanted for anything but just decided to go the the blacksmith, buy a cheap sword and go on an adventure just because it looked like fun…now he’s in the middle of a continent wide war, caught up in political intrigue, is best friends with a necromancer and has fought god twice

What happens a lot frustratingly is the “one of my parents is a some sort of powerful force”. The same player has done this with a greatwyrm, a verdant prince, an angel, the raven queen and a high-ranking demon

As a long time dm every backstory is fine…EXCEPT for this. The lone wolf archetype has no place in a cooperative storytelling game💀

My characters parents are dead, BUT she grew up in a religious temple and she can’t be a loner because she has no survival skills

My last rogue was the polar opposite. From a large, deeply supportive and loving family... Of paladins. She's the first to stray from the path and they couldn't be prouder of their little black cat. She had a weird path by the end of the campaign.

I recently played an aberrant mind sorcerer with the urchin background. when I was building her everyone assumed this was going to be a super edgy character as she had been abandoned by her parents specifically her mom. but she ended up being one of the most tender hearted sweet characters who knew what it was like to be below others and wanted to do nothing but lift others up. there was a point where our warlock had revealed that his Patron was the villain of our story and instead of chastising him or exiling him from the group, she simply informed him that he was family and that we would help him get out of his contract at any cost.

my rogue started with literally zero trauma. she was generally a good character, her parents? alive and well... she was a forge master. she got bored, got hired to protect a bard.. became besties with said bard. the trauma came during the campaign. the edgy was more... dealing with grief and trying to remain outwardly sane while dwelling on the vengeance slowly burning her morality away. 😅

I think it’s fine as long as it’s done right. I think veteran players are probably just over exposed to it because it tends to be a new player’s first go to trope. As long the player is respectful, open to character growth and does cooperative storytelling, let them play what they like 👍

here's an idea! invert the trope so that the rogue is just really dedicated to the esthetic of the identity because he wants to be special, when in reality he has a very average supporting and loving family lol

I play a slightly edgy rouge lol. Her parents abandoned her and her brother, and then her brother died. So she traveled alone at only 15. And since she’s still a kid, she finds a lot of comfort in her party members and they are almost like family to her now. She’s still young, only about 17 now, but she gets to act on her childish side with this group sometimes because she really wasn’t able to as a kid

While I do like playing a rogue, mine is an autistic and traumatized harengon who uses telepathy to talk, because he can't speak, because trauma.

I have an rogue who has dead parents but touched an artifact that killed them now their spirits follow him around and speak to him often no one but him can see them so he looks like he is talking to walls he is also permanently bound to the realm of the dead that has him constantly attuned with spirits of the dead. He isn’t really edgy but has a lot of guilt. Also has a few levels in grave cleric.
