Yes you read that correctly…  Let me break this down for you…  One of the MAJOR causes of death and shortening of our lives as we age is loss of muscle mass… This results in us being skinny fat, or sarcopenia if you prefer the technical term… Have an optimal amount of muscle mass is essential for insulin sensitivity and stable blood sugar levels…  Not having enough muscle (being skinny fat = sarcopenia) will definitely increase your risk of obesity and diabetes and all of the complications that come with these!  No bueno! How do you get enough muscle? You’ll need to get 50mg of the amino acid Leucine per lb of body weight in your diet, and to do some resistance exercise…  I weight, 165 lbs, this means I need to eat 8 grams of leucine per day for optimal muscle growth and maintenance…  I EASILY get this from 8 ounces of red meat… I eat far more than this every day… To get this from plant foods, like lentils (often recommended by so called longevity “experts”)  you would have to eat almost 8 CUPS every single day… No human could ever do this… AND this assumes the leucine in lentils is as bioavailable as meat- something we know to be not true…  Want to live a long, healthy life? Be sure to get enough leucine from animal meat!
