@theformidablegenealogist: I love these photos of my great grandfather's sisters, Hilda and Louise Jensen. They were the children of Norwegian immigrants and homesteaded out near the Badlands of South Dakota. (For anyone who knows I-90, it was right off of the exit for 1880 Town.) They each had a claim and a little shanty. Their brother, Gerhard, also homesteaded nearby. They would do laundry in a lake for the men who were building the nearby railroad. They killed a lot of rattlesnakes. I love that these single women had the audacity to file homestead claims in a time when few women owned land. #genealogy #ancestry
