I literally created a time travel heist for my second book bc I wanted a way to show the villains crazy origin story without just telling the FMC everything, so now she’s hunting through time and stealing things out of history that she’ll need to defeat him, all bc I hate an info dump

But how do you decide where to begin with? I wrote scene by scene and I started from the ending, slowly making my way back to the mid-section. But there are a lot of subplots and events that are just gonna branch out here. The main problem I have right now is that I have two generations of leaders instead of one. The 1st gen are founders and 2nd gen are those who picked up where they left off. Lots of main events happen from 2nd gen. And I have about 3 potential starting points at the moment. Can't decide which one to begin with.

My strategy is to use the "momentum" of the scene as a trigger for 3 to 4 lines of backstory. For example, my character seeing another child being mistreated reminds her of her own childhood etc. Moderation is the keyword of course!

I’m planning on doing something where it’s like rumours and stories about his back story that take place during his back story so it’s more of just a current story I guess

So I am basically writing a heigh Fantasy that is pretty much only about the Politics and history now my MC will get to see the what I call wrong part of history(basically just what the goverment made up to cover up their crimes) and my other MC is a rebell and has to explain the real history to her. I did a thing where I basically spend an entire chapter of these two walking through History and at the same time catchinh feelings for eachother I assume thats info dumping but like how else am I supposed to show this as there really isn't much time that I can spend slowly dropping info without it making no sense?

I found it nessisary to do some info dumps sometimes, I remedy the annoyance that the reader might feel by putting a character in the scene almost self aware and annoyed of the information being given, like a companion of annoyance. But never just have a character yap of for pages, it's a balancing act.

I've learned to sprinkle in the information once it's needed, not before. I originally info dumped in my first chapter, and during a few rewrites and edits, realized it's not needed and can be added later/throughout my book. Bits and pieces here and there. Not all at once.

What would you advise an author planning to query a manuscript that starts with two pages of backstory and world building before introducing their protagonist?
