So has no one ever really made any money on crypto or is it the crypto sellers making the money? I was intrigued by crypto in the form of Bitcoin early on but no one could adequately explain what it is and how to turn it into US dollars.

That's because blockchain should not be used for a currency, the only actual practical good use for blockchain technology is voting. originally the idea was that you had one CPU in your computer that you could vote with, in this context it would be voting on the technology or direction of Bitcoin. voting was the original reason for a decentralized blockchain, The digital coin that could not be reproduced was another reason but not the best one. It would be amazing as a voting tool.
