Yes! I ran a half marathon on mine and I think women can 100% do anything on their periods

I usually run faster on my period for some reason but just getting up and out there is harder

As a runner with endometriosis and adenomyosis unfortunately there are days I can’t run and that’s just my reality. If my period wasn’t so severe I would still run

the influx of those posts made me think i was weird for not noticing when i was in each phase of my cycle (beyond the actual period itself). if anything, running / exercising on my period just reduces the pain i get from cramps

I think it’s pretty individual. I for sure am physically weaker days 1-2 on my period. It affects my running and lifting. But also I’m not an elite athlete. I just try schedule deload week to period week. Also the first few days after my cycle I’m basically superwoman 💪

I get where you’re coming from, but as someone with severe iron deficiency I get especially lightheaded and dizzy on my cycle so I like to listen to my body and remain sensitive to that. To stop running completely isn’t necessary but I don’t see a problem with simply adjusting when needed. All women, deficient or not, lose significant amounts of iron on their cycles so I don’t believe that suggestions to adjust are “pseudoscience.”

amen - i think people need to listen to what their body feels like & not go in with a presumption what each stage “should” look like, so to each their own & use ur judgement listening to advice

I understand it if they mean "give yourself some grace if you don't hit your paces during your luteal phase" but like, just run to effort? you don't have to stop training altogether just because you're more tired

i definitely struggle much more on my workouts during my luteal phase/first day of my period.. this is when i'm most tired so the workouts feel so much more exhausting and strenuous. BUT i still do them as designated in my training cus i gotta get it done! and it helps me be more prepared for when i do have to push it and race during this time. i might take a preworkout or whatever else i need to do to boost my energy... i just give myself some grace for showing up instead of beating myself up over how much i struggled

I did a different sport (adjacent to running) but there was a study that i think linked injury risk to cycles with the idea being you could lift really heavy for 2-3 weeks and then should sync up a deload week (still lifting but eg not max reps/weight) at a specific point in your cycle and cut effort in cardio sessions by 5% to reduce injury risk, while working harder when we can recover better. I retired before anything actually changed though

It’s so frustrating because there are newer studies that support this but there’s SO FEW that it’s not super reputable science to follow yet. And “balance your hormones” people just take misinformation and run with it. I do hope we get more women’s sport science research in the future though bc I think it’s super cool to look into the female body in different contexts!!!

I agree but I think a lot of people don’t preform as well during certain parts of their cycle and it’s important to be able to understand that it’s ok for there to be performance differences and not beat yourself up because of it. If you run a slower time on your period it might not be because you’ve gotten slower, you’re just on your period.

yes!! it's wellness pseudoscience, plus inevitably perpetuates the outdated ideas that (a) regular cycles are a hindrance to athletic performance and (b) female athletes are more fragile in some way, can't train hard consistently, etc.

Also if you’re not tailoring your race/competition schedule to your cycle, why do it with training
