Let's just support one another. I am THAT teacher. I don't for my own sense of calm. After 17 years no district has ever given me enough contract time to do what I PERSONALLY need to do.

I am that teacher. It’s for me…not my school, not even really my students, mostly just me…if I have to spend all day every day in a space, the space will not suck.

year 21 here. I usually set up early because of the ability to peace out during PD week is unmatched (when my brain is fried). plus if I go in early I can take my daughter and get her help. I can't take her to my PD when my designated classroom time is some afternoon.

I’m one of those teachers. I’m a veteran educator ready for retirement. I spend a lot of time in my classroom and I want it to be a comfortable area for me.

I left teaching to work in a church and both settings exerted a lot of that “if you cared you’d do extra” vibe. Something I learned in my church job that I never learned teaching was to mentally separate what I did as my job and what I did as a volunteer, and to be intentional that the volunteer stuff really brings me joy to do. Now as I help my husband prep his classroom before school starts we decide what we’re willing to volunteer time for and what we aren’t. For him, he needs to ease into the year- showing up on first contract day with no prep just stresses him out.

And if you’re nice to them one summer when they’re bored, they might do something in your classroom for you. One summer a teacher on staff asked me if I wanted her to paint my classroom because she had nothing to do. Absolutely I want you to paint my classroom.

I think the anxiety I would feel if I waited until my contract to work on school stuff I would feel like I was behind all year and would end up doing more at home those first couple of weeks vs doing 3 hours of work in my classroom a couple times before I go back.

I agree 100%. We need to support one another and if it doesn’t affect you then let it go. They are happy doing what they’re doing so be happy for them. It may not be for you but it’s really not for you. It’s for them.

I work a couple of hours every Sunday lesson planning the week so that I can read or disassociate during my planning time. It’s a way for me to manage my contract hours for what I need, a break during the day!

That summer prep time, especially with classroom setting is for themselves. If you spend that much time somewhere shouldn’t it be an environment that makes you happy. (Heads off to Lowe’s to get paint for the bookshelves in my room for next year.)

If it takes me 1 day of my own time to set up my room so that I have a less stressful, more successful school year, I’m doing it. I CARE and I get it, it’s also just self-care for me.

If my room isn’t setup, I can’t concentrate on anything else. Also, I will have time to help you during inservice! Do you need borders or die cut letters? I got you. Do you need ideas for your bulletin board? I’ve got 12 ideas and the stuff needed to make it happen!

I will say the one teacher who I thought would wait til the last minute in my building has been coming in since early July. The floors didn’t even get done yet. I don’t really care what she does with her free time, but I thought for sure she wouldn’t be setting up that soon.

If I need to come in before contract kicks in, to make my room cute. Which will then help my mental health on the bad days. So be it. I’d never encourage anyone else to do it and I don’t think I’m better. It’s just what is good for me

I am that teacher. I need to come earlier to leisurely set up. Strangely, it gives me some peace and lessens my anxiety so by the time people come back and are frantically putting things together, I'm chilling and mentally prepping lol

You are the one who rightfully says “Children’s learning conditions are our work conditions.” Yes and amen. It’s not for your kids. It’s for me to enjoy walking into my space every morning.

Yes! I would get so many looks bc I’d stay late at school to prep or plan. But that’s what I needed for my brain. I couldn’t get work done during the day. Let people do what they need to do.

Agreed… There is a difference being “forced” to work outside of contract hours because you have so many duties that you basically have no choice and choosing to work on things on your off time. Those teachers probably enjoy the ability to do it on whatever time line they want and shouldn’t be shamed for it.

It’s amazing the peace to be found when you let people just do what they wanna do with their own lives and their own time.

I actually saw a tik tok that said we spend most of our day in the room so they wanted to make it look nice for themselves. I agree it's been more relaxing to start my day when I took one year to redecorate my teacher desk space and it looks cute.

we do get it, but we also have to choose our own sanity. knowing that I had to move all my stuff to a new classroom in May that I wasn't allowed to unpack, hang a curtain, nothing, is killing me. we don't have enough on contract time to make that room presentable for Meet the Teacher. I cannot wait to get in there!

As a full time teacher who also lives with chronic illness/autoimmune disease, I use part of the summertime to prep/plan and set up so I’m not using as much of my energy to do it in the fall, because I would otherwise crash. People need the space to do what’s best for them. Life’s too short to throw shade at people who are just trying to do their best. It’s not something that is going to make or break our system anyway. Our system is already a disaster.
