@fart.therapy: 📢 AASD says they “support” students with this elaborate flowchart, but 76% of schools don’t even have access to PATH, their main mental health program. So what do they do instead? Criminalize kids with truancy tickets. Let’s stop pretending this is about care. If we want better attendance, we need to meet students’ needs—not push them into court. If you can, please show up at the August 4th community public hearing and make your voice heard! Venue: Appleton public library 5:30-7pm. Also, contact an alderperson and let tell them to vote NO on enforcing tickets for truancy. #appleton #school #wisconsin #appletonwisconsin #fypage #fyp #aasd
i went to truancy court when i was 11 years old and had judge mcginnis make me cry. i felt targeted for being poor, and i didnt understand how it was my responsibility at that age to get myself to school. they gave me fines and community service for it too. he literally yelled in my face and a whole room of adults was okay with it. im 23 now and ill never forget it

Went to Green Bay school district, struggled HORRIBLY with my mental health, was told by admin that only people with “real struggles” can do alternate classes 🙃 I’m in my 30s now and my daughter is in kaukauna schools and we’re doing MUCH better

Not to mention mental health care in the valley is a nightmare. You almost have to drive to Milwaukee or Madison to find a mental health doctor.

Totally agree with you, and I’m proud of you for your obvious care about this subject. When my daughter was in the hospital, our school district sent a warning letter that she needed to be back in school or she faced truancy. I sent back a letter saying that I get well soon card would’ve been more thoughtful.

Mental health is only available through the school district? Maybe parents should be held more accountable to give their kids ge support they need?

I feel like there are a lot of moving parts to this issue. Back when I was in school, I rarely missed days. But when I got the flu or pneumonia and had to be out for long periods, my parents would pick up my missed work. There was parental responsibility and student responsibility on top of communication. So this leads me to think about a few things. Parents are letting kids stay home more and/or not caring enough to make sure their kid gets to school. Then on the flip side, the school doesn’t trust the parents enough to take their word when a child is sick. Then theres the issue of needing a doctor note to prove the child was sick but not having the money to go to the doctor every time the kid gets the flu. What do we do when small issues like this, when looking at the whole picture overall, stems from huge issues: lack of parenting, a lack of trust, a lack financial means from both the school and parents, and schools feeling like they have to make rules that oversteps the judgement of parents.

Ooof, yeah I struggled in high school and was receiving help for it. And my school threatened to send both me and my Mom to jail the whole time 🙃 if it wasn’t for the amazing teachers who went out of their way, on their own, to provide the programs to help me and others like me- I would not have graduated on time. I knew a student who was given an ankle monitor for being truant (a kid btw who never got into trouble before, never did drugs etc) I won’t say his name (or the school) but the dean of students who we had to deal with was incredibly cruel, unfeeling, and just all around disgusting to deal with. To be frank, I am lucky to still be here- and it was not due to the “efforts” of the school system, it was due to my amazing teachers who fought for me ❤️

Oshkosh is the same. We pulled out during kinder, started homeschooling, and are THRIVING. Both of my kids were able to basically skip a grade.

School systems are the most clueless when it comes to reality of families. If a procedure is evidence based, then the board all drinks the kool-aide in unison. School systems turn my democratic heart in a republican real fast. Zero common sense when it comes to policy.

I get truancy letters every year. my kids are A students, athletes, and non trouble makers. if I want to take them on vacation for 10 days and a few other absences throughout the year , send me all the letters you want we'll go to court.

i remember there never being a counselor in my elementary school. it’s way worse in the lesser funded/lower income schools as someone who has been in one of the “rich” schools & a “poor” school

in the process of making those connections and building those relationships it takes an entire school and the atmosphere it presents. Students who feel engaged and connected attend school more often. School districts have limited funds. who in the community wants to be involved? It starts with prevention early. These are patterns built over the years. Those connections start young.

What are the parents doing? Attendance is the parents responsible. Never once did you talk about the lack of parenting

I went to west de pere highschool, when you miss 10 class periods, its counts as truancy, that's 2 whole days. I have chronic health issues (migraines, and I can't go to urgent care everytime I have a migraine to get a note), I had to leave many days, and I had truancy letters coming in by September. This year I didn't have any form of "intervention" and I graduated with over 30 absences my senior year... They don't care if you have good grades, and I was in all AP, Honors and College credit classes.

I didn't even know they did tickets anymore. I went to AEHS and had a lot of trouble with absences but i also was on an IEP so that may have stopped me from getting them.
