The plastic and Chinese stuff has actually been getting kind of decent. I never shamed a kid if that’s what they had, but if there were problems, I tried to educate the parents then. Also they’re handy for marching band when a kid doesn’t want to put their nice/family heirloom instrument through all that.

I don’t know anytime I tried to play a plastic clarinet I had a couple red ones and those are awful and I had some older plastic clarinets. I found at garage sales and they’re harder for me to play too. I like my old wooden clarinet from 45 years ago, but maybe new ones r better? I prefer wood-

My brother wanted to play clarinet so I got him a cheap blue one with gold keys to see if he even liked it. 20 yrs later, he now has several that cost multi-thousands and he plays professionally. Let the kids have fun.

if the instrument plays in tune and makes a sound that can blend in with the other players in their section, I'm not going to take a major issue with it. I will let students know when repair shops might not work on their instruments though

P-Bones and P-Trumpets are solid if you just want to keep your chops up or only play in special circumstances. I use mine for alumni band since it’s one of two times I play it vigorously all year

My high school band director hated plastic instruments except for use in pep or marching band where there’s a higher risk of dropping it.

I had to use plastic mouthpieces in jazz band because the metal ones gave me an allergic reaction. I think if these are cheaper too it’s accessible for families who might not be able to afford instruments or rentals otherwise! 🥰

Or you can be like me and buy your kid a 3000$ alto sax only for the band teacher to tell your kid they need him to play tenor so the alto just sits 😳….
