@rockhall: Sinéad O'Connor Photo of Pope John Paul II | Irish singer-songwriter Sinéad O'Connor's second @nbcsnl appearance was one of the program's most controversial performances ever. Following a haunting a cappella rendition of @bobmarley's "War," O'Connor tore up a picture of Pope John Paul II and said, "Fight the real enemy." Her actions were a protest against the Catholic church's coverup of child abuse, but the gesture resulted in numerous viewer complaints and criticism, negatively affecting her career. "[In hindsight] | think it was the bravest possible thing [Sinéad O'Connor] could do," Lorne Michaels said. "...To her the church symbolized everything that was bad about growing up in Ireland the way she grew up in Ireland, and so she was making a strong political statement."
I always believed in her nobody's going to destroy there entire life with a lie.... people knew then that she was telling the truth but didn't want to admit the truth

She was right. But at the time. It ruined her musical career .

O’Connor fue muy valiente al hacer esto, desafortunadamente fue la razón por la que su carrera se vino abajo, pero es y seguirá siendo una de las mejores voces femeninas en la industria de la música.

Negatively affecting anyone’s career is not necessarily a negative affect on their life… Some ideas are worth fighting for, and/or drawing attention to. Popularity, career, or public opinion, carry no weight in the face of Justice, decency, or integrity. Fight the fight worth fighting for, and all that comes with it, is Welcomed 🙏

This woman was so unjustly maligned, and deserves an apology. Especially from you, Joe Pesci.

I saw this live when it happened. I’m not Catholic and I was too young to understand the message she was putting out so my reaction was just that it was weird. The next morning, however, it was all over the news. People were talking about it in church the next day. We weren’t even Catholic. Even then, I was wondering why a bunch of Southern Baptists would care about what a singer said about the Pope. Turns out, she was right. About all of it. So matter how much the world might apologize to her for destroying her for telling the truth, it won’t be enough.
