The midwest publication i translate for did a profile of Latino Trump voters in the lead up to the election. of the social indicators these were most common: nearly all were naturalized or 2nd/3rdgen Americans. nearly all were evangelical. half of them owned small businesses. so the indicator breakdown was often religion and taxes. this is despite what local and state dems had done for small business they still saw Republicans as more favorable to small business on the national level

This is what I call the Chicano vs Tejano divide. But my pushback is this: as a Black Person, even tho crime isn't a concern for me, when a politician talks about crime I know they mean locking up Black People. So when Latino voters heard "Mass Deportation" did they not realize he meant everybody, not just criminals. And thanks for adding context/ nuance to this conversation.

Thank you for your perspective; you highlighted points I had not considered. However, I believe you underemphasize issues like colorism and how some Latinos treat Black individuals.

Honest question: This person was not asking in good faith. She began her questioning with “if you have eyes.” Why not address the imperial/colonial subcontext of her post directly?

💯💯💯 totally and also the rippling effects of colonization and the caste system are still alive to these days, not to mention the fascist propaganda circulating around in our countries that has brainwashed folx into supporting the wealthy and voting against their best interests 🫠

Mexicans take the brunt of the racism and bias that people have against Latinos , people tend to put ALL Latinos in one category as being Mexican, which shows their ignorance and is unfair to Mexicans especially when Mexico is one of the Richest Latin countries in Latin America besides Brazil, Mexico is always looked down on buy other Latin countries which I don’t understand when they come from poorer countries.

As a Mexican American, I do feel like the rhetoric that we are not accepted by Mexicans who are born in Mexico did pushed some people to cling to America and the patriotism. There are plenty of Tejanos who refuse to acknowledge that they are Mexican American. Another thing I noticed is our history in this country is purposely censored and hidden, many do not know what we’ve been through as a community from the Bath Riots to Mexican repatriation.

Note Lanae refers to black communities (plural, not singular) and I believe she will in the future speak of Latin communities due to your thoughtful responses

I watched all the way through. Paola Ramos’ book, Defectors is amazing. It does such a good job of laying it all out. I hope that all these people who want to “capture” the Latino vote read it so they can quit acting like we all vote for whoever is going to “fix” immigration.

I love this. I love that you are responding to Lanae. She is a driving force, and you are a most fabulous educator and also a driving force. She educates me in black history and what it means to be black and you educate me in ways that makes sense to me…you relate history to today. I appreciate both of you for many different reasons and many of the same.

I can understand how Latinos who have been in the US for generations would think immigration is not an especially relevant issue. But did they truly not understand that mass deportations by a white supremacist government would include *anyone* brown, citizen or not? It’s happened before and Trump et al were not mincing words.

Your explanation was really well detailed and I would add to it that a lot of the diversity in political spectrum within the 33 countries Latin immigrants come from also can be attributed directly to how this country has dabbled in the politics back home. America doesn’t like to see itself as a colonizer, but it very much has been over the last 150 years or so in various ways.

Cubans have every reason to hate Democrats. Every reason. And yet Obama nearly won the Cuban vote, garnering 48%. It’s almost as if running a decenct campaign on policy would have made a bigger difference than just playing identity politics but too many of y’all don’t want to hear that.

I think we also have to acknowledge the role that religion and education level also factor into the Latino vote.

I think the biggest hurdle is we understand that Latinos aren’t a monolith. Just like the black diaspora we all have subsections of communities with different cultures and values. However, I like to believe Black people tend to move as a unit(?). Essentially there are many of us who will think of what would benefit the community as whole. Not saying that other races don’t do that I’m noticing that it’s what black people tend to do. I love the video tho! I respect the open and honest dialogue going on
