I’m with Mr Sandman 010 on this one! I’m an older driver as well, I’ve driven plenty of trucks with no engine brake!

A Jake Brake is different from engine break.

If no engine brake. Never go in lower gear. If do need try keep steady speed. Can blow motor over rev motor. Never stab brake. Lose to much air. Doesn’t sound like she driven. Semi

The old trucks did not have engine brakes. Also didn't have turbos.

Hell I have seen old trucks with water cans on them to keep the brakes cool going down the hills

COE 1992-1993, no engine brake, drove Colorado and Rocky Moutains. Down shift and light steady brake.

All engines even diesel engines can engine brake. The compression release break (Jake brake) was introduced to the market way back in 1961 and it just makes the process faster.

Never trust or depend on a Jake Brake. Always run the proper gear. I had one fail on Donner while running close to 80k.

Got question for you. How long have you been driving truck?

Mr Sandman 010 :
Also, you have it backwards. Today we go down a hill the same you went up. The engine brake should hold you at the same speed you went up. Same horse power, same gear. No they had NO engine brake at all! Some did but, most cab overs did not. I was there so don’t tell me I’m wrong.

Go down in the gear you climb in. Light pressure on brakes. 😉

In the old days you went down a gear lower than climbing and had to let brakes breathe. 250 hp was common back then. No turbo, no engine brakes. Now if you know what you are doing, you can go down faster than you can climb. I grew up in mountainous area in the 60's and 70's. Stab braking is not good in the mountains. 5-15 miles of 5-6% grade is where I drive. Steepest I drove is 12% 8 miles long and very high in elevation and climbing couldn't use my hp, had to drive according to my engine temperature. I'm in my 60's.
