I can say it’s due to the fact our society is overworking the parents and not giving them the correct amount of time to nurture and teach their kids. We need to change something in the dirt and roots of our systems

The lack of accessible third places in most of the U.S. is one of the main reasons American kids aren’t socializing. Social media plays a role, but the biggest issue is urban design. You rarely see kids playing outside in neighborhoods anymore because most American suburbs are lifeless and lack a sense of community. When you go outside, you often don’t see many people walking around because there’s usually nothing within walking distance—no stores, shops, restaurants, grocery stores, or public spaces where people can gather and socialize. There might be a small park nearby, but that’s often all there is.

It’s due to overworking parents, and parents not being taught how to parent, most parents genuinely do not know how to use basic reinforcement learning, and kids aren’t seeing their parents in the same social situations, so they are also loosing the crucial coping phase

Dude the shoe laces thing— it’s not the parent’s fault this one is on the manufacturer’s. Every time I go to the store all the kid shoes are velcro, or slip ons. The only time I find laced shoes for kids are actual shoe stores (not the department stores where most people do their shopping) and there’s only one or two types of laced shoes, AND they’re more expensive than non laced shoes.

i dobt want to defend every point here but i do feel like certain "skills" do become unneccessary to kbow after a while. ex if society evolves to a point where pens ar no longer needed since 110% of all writing is digital then why should we teach ppl to do something they will never use. and moving away from shoelaces to make shoes that are easier to adjust and that you can just fit your foot right into is what i go for nowadsys cos tying shoelaces is annoiying and inconveniant

My oldest can’t really tie a shoe. They are an adult. We tried SO HARD but that kid was more stubborn and refused to learn. Also likely autistic, we’re on a waitlist to get diagnosed (at the child’s request.) My younger kid can tie their shoes. But yeah, we def need to teach our kids these things if we can. Life is hard.

I am a guest Native English teacher at a middle school in South Korea.. tablet and phone addiction is real and I have noticed that attention span of my students is not good and also the Korean teachers at the school have noted a lot more behavioral issues and inability to understand social cues or social interaction. The school flat out toom away cell phones during the day so that kids have no choice but to interact with each other and go outside during breaks to work off energy.

In my teaching career only maybe 1 or 2 students has ever had these problems. that's not the school's fault, but mostly a parents' fault for not teaching their kids basic skills

Seems like a lot of them are the parents' fault.

the only one I disagree with is tying shoes... we need to normalize velcro for adult shoes 😅

Bruh holding a pencil isn’t a relevant life skill. The boomers writing these articles needed help from their grandkids to type out this article.

All comes down to lazy parenting. It's not the teachers job to teach children fundamental life skills that are taught at home.
