You’re Bulgarian? Fascinating. Your accent sounds so different from my Bulgarian friend’s accent. Like I’m not talking about the heaviness of your accent (hers is heavier than yours), but it’s more like the way you say the same words are so different from my friend!

Born in Greece, moved to Atlanta, came back before kindergarten but my mom was an English teacher, so we learn English and Greek. My dad was working in Istanbul and in Germany. We had a teacher for the German, and we learn the Turkish because we used to stay there during summer. ☺️Now, my Turkish and Deutsch are a bit rusty, because I don’t spend long periods of time in Turkey and in Germany anymore. So I totally understand your point. ☺️

Hmm I had another experience. My parents moved from Bulgaria to Belgium when i was 5. My parents kept talking to me in Bulgarian so that I wouldn’t fully commit on learning Dutch. So I was kinda raised in both languages. I think that the main difference here is that you didn’t practice speaking Bulgarian at home in the US when you were little, which is understandable of course! :)

I’m half slovak 🇸🇰 & half ukrainian 🇺🇦 (live in england tho) but at home I only spoke slovak, I had to relearn ukrainian, watching videos and reading in cyrillic really helped me, I can speak it well now! You really have to immerse yourself in the language, it’s fantastic being bi/multilingual 🫶🏼

As a language teacher I partly agree with you - it is possible to learn a language well without visiting the country, although it definitely helps a lot. However, when it comes to languages like Chinese or any other Asian language I think you should move to learn

Being bilingual with a not so common second language is difficult!! I moved to Finland and learned the language. I wish I had people to talk to lol.

Why do you still sound Bulgarian when speaking English? Also, you totally look younger than 25 🥰

It’s so true! It was a rule in our house to only speak Ukrainian at the dinner table - once that stopped, the skills fell off and I only really practiced with my grandparents. My grammar is esp like a toddler level now lol. Can understand but really shaky speaking it back

I think honestly it's easier nowadays to do that with the internet literally at your fingertips, I haven't set foot in a country with predominantly English speakers and only have to look up words I come across in books that use a more flowery language. But just reading in general really, really helps

Yes, I agreed. My daughter learned to speak Bulgarian because we lived there 3 months last year. Before she understood a little but couldn't speak.

During that year, what else were you doing? I always thought of living in my family country (Romania) for a year but I think I’ll need a job to have such a huge gap in my life

i also think the problem back then was the lack of exposure, nowadays its easier to immerse yourself without going to that country since you can access so many books/movies/tv etc through your phone

This really surprised me. From your appearance and manner of speaking I was certain you were Spanish or possibly Mexican. But Bulgarian?! 👩🏻🇧🇬🤯 Would never have guessed. We Americans aren’t exposed enough to other people.
